Zespri International Limited is the biggest seller of kiwifruit in the world. They sell their fruit in over 50 countries. Their main office is in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.
Zespri also works with growers in other countries. These include Italy, France, Japan, South Korea, Greece, and Australia. They are also trying to grow kiwifruit in other places. Kiwifruit from New Zealand is ready to eat from May to October. To have fruit all year, Zespri sells kiwifruit from Italy from November to January.
Zespri offers different types of kiwifruit. These include SunGold, Green, and Organic varieties.
How Zespri Started
Zespri began in 1988. It was first called the "New Zealand Marketing Board." In 2000, it became a group of kiwifruit growers. They changed the name to "Zespri International Ltd."
Some Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit plants have been taken to China without permission. Farmers there are growing these plants in orchards that are not allowed. This means they are growing fruit that competes with Zespri's own fruit.
Zespri has become more popular in Australia recently. This is partly because of a fun marketing campaign. It featured two dancing and singing kiwifruit characters.
In February 2023, Zespri announced a plan. They wanted to be listed on the NZX later that year. The NZX is a stock exchange in New Zealand. Only kiwifruit growers would be able to own shares in Zespri.
Kiwifruit Breeding Centre
The Kiwifruit Breeding Centre is a special project. It is a partnership between Plant & Food Research and Zespri. They both own an equal part of the centre. It started in October 2021 and is based in Te Puke.
The centre also has locations in Kerikeri, Motueka, and Mt Albert. It is a place for research and development. Their main goal is to make kiwifruit better. They want to create new types of kiwifruit. These new types should be healthier and taste better. They also want them to be more friendly to the environment. Matt Glenn is the first CEO of this centre.
