The Zestar! apple, also known as Minnewashta, is a special type of apple that first appeared in 1999. It was created by plant experts at the University of Minnesota's Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
This apple is famous for ripening early in the season, usually from late August through September. This means apple picking can start sooner in places like Minnesota! The Zestar! apple trees were even tested in cold labs. This makes sure they can grow well in chilly northern areas.
How Zestar! Apples Were Created
For a long time, experts at the University of Minnesota have been working to create new and better apples. They started this work way back in 1878! Since then, they have developed over 24 new types of apples. Some of their well-known creations include the Honeycrisp, Haralson, and Sweet 16.
The Zestar! apple was made by combining two other apple types: State Fair and MN 1691. This process is called hybridization. Before Zestar! came along, early-ripening apples were often thought of as not very good. They were usually soft, didn't last long, and had different flavors. Zestar! changed that!
In 2010, another apple called Minneiska was created. It is sold under the brand name SweeTango. This apple was made using Zestar! and Honeycrisp apples as its "parents." People say SweeTango apples have an amazing "super crunch!"
What Zestar! Apples Look Like and Taste Like
The Minnewashta apple is usually round and about three inches wide. It has a crisp and light texture when you bite into it. About 60% to 80% of the apple's skin turns a deep red color. This happens when it gets enough sunlight as it grows. The rest of the skin stays yellow or greenish.
Zestar! apples have a sweet and tangy taste. Some people even say they can taste hints of brown sugar! This apple is great for eating fresh, just as it is. It's also perfect for baking, making sauces, desserts, and adding to salads. You can pair it with foods like walnuts, cinnamon, cheddar cheeses, and brown sugar.
One cool thing about Zestar! apples is how long they last. You can store them for up to two months, even without a refrigerator! Their flavors can actually get stronger and better if you keep them at room temperature.
How Zestar! Apples Are Sold
The Zestar! apple has helped more people in the Midwest get fresh apples. The Zestar! apple is protected by a special rule called a US Plant Patent. This means it's a unique type of plant.
Like other apples developed by the University of Minnesota, Zestar! is a registered trademark. This means it's a "managed variety." Only growers who have a special license from the university can grow these apples. They also have to follow strict rules for growing, picking, and shipping them. This helps make sure every Zestar! apple is top quality!
