Zita Mary Stead Blackburn (born Stead) (1904-1986) was a talented medical illustrator. This means she drew pictures for medical books and studies. She was also one of the people who helped start the Medical Artists Association of Great Britain. This group helps make sure medical artists are professional and skilled.

Zita's Early Life

Zita Stead was born on March 21, 1904. Her hometown was Bedale in North Yorkshire, England. Her father, Robert Stead, worked as a blacksmith. Her mother's name was Mary Helen. Zita had one brother, George Robert, and three sisters: Mary Helen, Christina, and Winifred.

Training and Career

Zita studied fine art and earned a special diploma from the Scarborough School of Art. She also learned about anatomy (the study of the body's structure) and histology (the study of tiny tissues) at King's College London.

In 1933, Zita became an artist and research assistant. She worked in the Anatomy Department at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College. Besides her main job, she drew many medical pictures. These included drawings of surgeries, diseased body parts, and teaching displays. She also created other medical artwork for different parts of St Bartholomew's Hospital.

Zita was also very good at photomicrography. This is taking photos through a microscope. Her amazing work appeared in important medical books. These included famous ones like Gray's Anatomy and Cunningham's Textbook of Anatomy.

In 1936, Zita moved to University College London. She went with her boss, H.H. Woollard. During the Second World War, Zita worked with Arnold Kirkpatrick Henry. They were at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in Hammersmith, London. They worked together on a book called Extensile Exposure Applied to Limb Surgery. Zita said much of their research happened in the post-mortem room. This is where doctors teach about the body after death. They taught surgeons how to find main blood vessels without big operations.

After the war, Zita worked mostly on her own. In 1949, she joined other skilled medical illustrators. They included Dorothy Davison, Audrey Arnott, and Margaret McLarty. Together, they started the Medical Artists Association of Great Britain. The main goal of this group was to set high standards. They also wanted to check if new artists were good enough. Zita was the Honorary Secretary for the Association.

After her husband passed away, Zita returned to full-time work. She was a Medical Artist at the University of Manchester from 1958 to 1959.
