Zürich Airport (also known as Flughafen Zürich in German) is a big international airport in Switzerland. It helps people travel to and from Zürich, one of Switzerland's largest cities. The airport is about 13 kilometers (8 miles) north of central Zürich. It is located across several towns like Kloten and Opfikon. Zürich Airport first opened in 1948. It is also sometimes called Kloten Airport.

Zürich Airport is the largest airport in Switzerland. It is a very important place for air travel in Europe. Many people fly in and out of this airport every day.
A Busy Travel Hub
In 2016, over 27 million passengers used Zürich Airport. This makes it one of the busiest airports in Europe. It also handled almost 270,000 flights in the same year. This means a lot of planes take off and land there!
Home to Airlines
Zürich Airport is the main base, or "hub," for Swiss International Air Lines. This means many of their flights start or end here. Other airlines like Edelweiss Air and Helvetic Airways also use Zürich as a key airport.
Runways for Planes
The airport has three long runways. These are special paved areas where planes take off and land.
- Runway 10/28 is 2,500 meters (8,202 feet) long.
- Runway 14/32 is 3,300 meters (10,827 feet) long.
- Runway 16/34 is 3,700 meters (12,139 feet) long.
All the runways are made of strong concrete.
Getting to the Airport
Zürich Airport has its own railway station called Zürich Flughafen. This makes it easy for travelers to get to and from the airport by train.
