He scored 14 goals when Emelec won the 2014 championship. Mena extended his contract with the club for two more years in February 2015. He scored the first goal in the 2014 Ecuadorian Serie A final match. Emelec won that game 3–0 against Barcelona SC.

International Football Journey
Early National Team Calls
In April 2014, while playing for Emelec, Mena was first called to the Ecuador national football team. This was for a training camp led by coach Reinaldo Rueda. Mena was also part of Ecuador's first 30-player squad for the World Cup 2014 in Brazil.
Later in 2014, the temporary coach, Sixto Vizuete, called Mena to play friendly matches. These games were against Bolivia and Brazil. However, Mena got an injury and could not play for the national team then.
Making His Debut
Mena played his first game for Ecuador on March 28, 2015. He came into the match against Mexico as a substitute for Jefferson Montero.
He was chosen for Ecuador's 23-player squad for the Copa América Centenario. Mena was also part of the 23-man squad for the 2019 Copa América. He was selected again for the 28-player Ecuador squad for the 2021 Copa América.
Mena was named in the Ecuadorian squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was also called up for the final 26-man Ecuador squad for the 2024 Copa América. He officially retired from playing for the national team on November 17, 2024.
Personal Life
Ángel Mena is married to Shirley Posligua. They have two daughters together. He and his family are very religious Christians. Mena is also good friends with fellow footballer Joao Rojas. They shared a locker room when they played for Emelec. The fact that Rojas played for Cruz Azul helped Mena decide to join that club.
