The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP28, was a major meeting about climate change. It was the 28th time this event happened. It took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 30 to December 12, 2023.
These conferences happen every year. They bring together leaders from around the world. Their goal is to agree on ways to slow down global warming. They also discuss how to prepare for the changes climate change brings.
Many people had concerns about COP28. Some worried about the choice of the United Arab Emirates as the host country. This is because the UAE is a big producer of fossil fuels. The leader of the summit, Sultan Al Jaber, is also the head of a large oil company. This led to worries about a possible conflict of interest.
Some reports suggested that the UAE might use the conference to make new fossil fuel deals. This caused international concern. However, on December 13, a final agreement was reached. It asked all countries to "transition away" from fossil fuels. This means slowly moving to cleaner energy. The goal is to reach net zero by 2050. This was the first time a COP agreement directly mentioned moving away from all types of fossil fuels. But some people felt it did not go far enough.
Understanding the Background of COP28
The United Arab Emirates is a country that is very affected by climate change. It has a very hot and humid climate. The average temperature in the UAE has risen by 1.27°C (2.29°F) since 1990. Scientists expect that some areas could become too hot and humid for people to be outside for long periods.
The Red Sea and Persian Gulf regions already experience many extreme heat and humidity events. Other problems in the area include dust storms, rising sea levels, and drought.
The UAE is working to reduce its carbon emissions. They are trying new ways to farm, like organic and hydroponic methods. They are also building new railways and reducing waste, especially food waste. They want to create a more circular economy.
The UAE has promised to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This means they will remove as much carbon from the air as they put into it. They were the first country in the Middle East to make this promise. They also signed the Paris Agreement in 2016. The UAE has invested a lot of money in clean energy projects around the world. They plan to invest even more by 2030.
