Important Events of 253

Changes in the Roman Empire

New Emperors and Challenges

The year 253 was a very busy time for the Roman Empire. Many different leaders tried to become emperor. This period is sometimes called the "Thirty Tyrants" because so many people claimed to be in charge.

One of these leaders was a man named Aemilianus. He was a Roman general. The Roman Senate (a powerful group of leaders) declared Aemilianus an "enemy of the State." This meant they did not support him.

Even so, Aemilianus ruled the Roman Empire for about three months. He promised to fight in a region called Thrace. He also planned to go to war against the Persian Empire. The Senate even gave him the important title of Pontifex Maximus, which was a religious leader role.

However, Aemilianus was later killed in a place called Spoletium. After his death, the Roman soldiers stationed near the Rhine River chose a new emperor. His name was Publius Valerianus.

Valerian's Rule Begins

When Valerian I became emperor, he decided to split the Roman Empire into two parts. This was likely to make it easier to manage.

A major battle happened in 253 called the Battle of Barbalissos. King Shapur I of the Persian Empire fought against the Roman army. The Roman army had about 70,000 soldiers, led by Emperor Valerian I. The Persians won this battle, which took place in Syria at a location called Barbalissos.

Religious Events

Leaders of the Church

In 253, Pope Cornelius was sent away from Rome. This was a form of punishment called exile.

On June 25, a new pope was chosen. His name was Pope Lucius I. He became the 22nd pope. However, Lucius I was also arrested very soon after he was chosen. He was also sent into exile, just like Pope Cornelius.
