Changes in the Roman Empire
Emperor Carus's Journey and Death
In 283, the Roman Emperor Carus traveled through different parts of the empire. He went through Thrace (an area in Southeast Europe) and Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey).
Carus then led his armies to invade Syria and Mesopotamia. These regions were important territories in the Middle East. Because of his victories against the Persian Empire, Carus was given a special title. He was called Persicus Maximus, which means "Greatest Persian".
Sadly, Emperor Carus died during this year. He was killed during a very strong dust storm. Many believed he was struck by lightning.
New Emperors Take Power
After Carus died, his son, Marcus Aurelius Carinus, became the new Roman Emperor. He took over his father's position.
Later in the year, in December, another important event happened. Numerian, who was also a son of Carus, was made Emperor by his soldiers. This meant the Roman Empire had new leaders.
