Amazing New Buildings
The Lighthouse of Alexandria
A truly incredible building was finished in 285 BC: the Lighthouse of Alexandria. This giant lighthouse stood on the island of Pharos, right in the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt. It was about 110 meters (around 360 feet) tall!
This lighthouse was a super important landmark for ships sailing in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It was built by an architect named Sostratus of Cnidus for the new pharaoh, Ptolemy II. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was so amazing that it became known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
It was a huge step forward in building technology. It even had a wide, spiraling ramp that led all the way to the top. At night, a big fire would burn there, guiding ships safely to port. This lighthouse became the model for all lighthouses built after it.
