- A powerful Roman leader named Galerius was a "Caesar." A Caesar was like a junior emperor, often chosen to help rule and eventually become the main emperor. Galerius was in charge of the Balkans, a region in Southeast Europe. He spent this year fighting against several groups of people, including the Goths, Marcomanni, Sarmatians, and Carpi. These groups often tried to raid or move into Roman lands.
- Another important Roman leader, Emperor Diocletian, traveled to Egypt. He was joined by a young man who would later become a very famous emperor, Constantine I the Great. In Egypt, Emperor Diocletian surrounded the city of Alexandria with his army. This is called a "siege." He was there to defeat a person named Achilleus, who had claimed to be an emperor in Egypt. Diocletian successfully removed Achilleus from power.
