New Emperors and Power Struggles
- January 18 – The Roman Emperor Constans I was not popular. Because of this, a new emperor named Magnus Magnentius was declared in a city called Autun in Gaul (modern-day France).
- January – Emperor Constans I tried to escape to Spain. However, he was caught and killed. Magnentius then took control of the Western Roman Empire. He was fair to both Christians and Pagans.
- March 1 – A woman named Constantina asked a general named Vetranio to become a "Caesar" (a lower-level emperor). The main emperor, Constantius II, accepted this new ruler.
- June 3 – A Roman leader named Iulius Nepotianus declared himself "emperor." He marched into Rome with a group of gladiators.
- June 30 – Nepotianus was defeated and killed by a general named Marcellinus.
- December 25 – Vetranio met with Emperor Constantius II in a city called Naissus in Serbia. Vetranio was forced to give up his title as emperor.
