Abéché (Arabic: أبشه, Absha) is the fourth largest city in Chad. It is the capital of the Ouaddaï Region. The city has old palaces, mosques, and tombs of past leaders.

History of Abéché
Becoming a Capital City
Abéché became the capital of the Wadai Sultanate in the 1890s. This happened after the water wells in the old capital, Ouara, dried up.
French Influence and Changes
In 1909, French soldiers arrived and took control of Abéché. They made the sultan give up his power. At that time, Abéché was the biggest city in Chad, with about 28,000 people. However, many diseases spread, and by 1919, the population dropped to 6,000.
In 1935, the French government brought back the sultanate. Muhammed Ouarada became the new leader.
What Abéché is Known For Today
Abéché was once an important stop on a historical trade route. Today, it is known for its busy markets and beautiful mosques. There is also a church and a main square called Place de l'Indépendance. The city also has the sultan's palace.
Abéché has several schools, a hospital, and a university. It is also home to a major army base for Chad's national army. The city has a small airport (AEH/FTTC) that operates during the day. It has flights to N'Djaména, the capital of Chad.
Recent Events in Abéché
On November 25, 2006, a group briefly took control of the city. They caused a lot of damage. The next day, the Chadian army took the city back.
In October 2007, Abéché gained international attention. This was due to an incident involving French volunteers from a charity.

Abéché is a very important center for helping people. About 240,000 refugees from Darfur, a region in Sudan, live in camps near the city. Many organizations, like the UNHCR and UNICEF, have offices here. They provide aid and support to these refugees.

Abéché is surrounded by savanna grasslands. This makes it an important place for raising cattle. One of the local industries is making blankets from camel hair.

Abéché has major roads that connect it to N'Djamena, the capital. It also connects to Sarh and to neighboring Sudan. The Abéché Airport serves the city, with flights to N'Djamena and Faya-Largeau.
