Ab McDonald's Hockey Journey
Ab McDonald was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He started his professional hockey career with the Montreal Canadiens. This was in the National Hockey League (NHL) during the 1958 season.
Playing for Top Teams
After playing for Montreal, he joined several other famous teams. These included the Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Boston Bruins. He also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues.
Winning the Stanley Cup
Ab McDonald was a very successful player. He won the Stanley Cup four times in a row! He won three Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens. Then, he won another one with the Chicago Black Hawks. This shows how important he was to these winning teams.
Becoming a Captain
He was chosen to be the very first team captain for two different organizations. These were the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Winnipeg Jets. Being a captain means you are a leader for your team.
The World Hockey Association
Ab McDonald also played in the World Hockey Association (WHA). This was another major hockey league at the time. He scored the very first goal for the Winnipeg Jets in the WHA. He played 147 games for the Jets. He retired from hockey after the 1973–74 season.
Ab McDonald passed away at his home in Winnipeg on September 4, 2018. He was 82 years old.
