Abby Phillip is an American journalist and news anchor. She was born on November 25, 1988. She is well-known for her work at CNN, where she hosts a show called CNN NewsNight.
Before joining CNN, Abby Phillip worked for other major news organizations. These included Politico, where she reported on the Obama White House. She also worked for The Washington Post as a national political reporter. Earlier in her career, she was a digital reporter for politics at ABC News.
Early Life and Education
Abby Phillip's family comes from Trinidad and Tobago. She was born in Alexandria, Virginia. Her mother, June Phillip, is a realtor. Her father, Carlos Phillip, was a teacher and later an educational psychologist. Abby has five brothers and sisters.
When she was a child, her family lived in Trinidad and Tobago for a short time. They moved back to the U.S. when Abby was nine years old. The family first lived in Germantown, Maryland, then settled in Bowie, Maryland.
Abby Phillip went to Bowie High School. After high school, she attended Harvard University. She graduated in 2010 with a degree in government. She had first planned to study medicine. While at Harvard, she wrote for the student newspaper, The Harvard Crimson.
Career
Abby Phillip started her journalism career at Politico. She worked as a reporter covering the White House. She also wrote about how money is used in political campaigns.
In 2017, Phillip joined CNN. There, she reported on the government led by President Donald Trump. Before CNN, she worked at The Washington Post. Her jobs there included reporting on national politics and other general news stories. She also worked at ABC News as a digital reporter in New York City. She has appeared many times on C-SPAN, a TV channel that shows government events. She also sometimes appears on the TV show Washington Week on PBS.
In January 2020, Abby Phillip helped lead a debate for the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries. This debate took place at Drake University. Some people felt she was unfair to one of the candidates, Bernie Sanders, during the debate.
In 2020, Abby Phillip signed a deal to write a book. The book is called The Dream Deferred. It is about Reverend Jesse Jackson's attempt to become the Democratic presidential candidate in 1988. The book was planned for release in 2022, but it has not come out yet.
On January 11, 2021, CNN announced that Abby Phillip would be the new anchor for the Sunday edition of Inside Politics. She started this role on January 24, taking over from John King. The Sunday show is now called Inside Politics Sunday With Abby Phillip.
In August 2023, CNN announced big changes to its weekday and weekend shows. Abby Phillip was named the permanent host of CNN's 10 p.m. ET show. This new show is called CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip. Because of this change, she no longer holds her role as CNN's Senior Political Correspondent.
Personal Life
Abby Phillip lives in Washington, D.C.. She is married to Marcus Richardson, who works as a cybersecurity consultant. They got married in May 2018 at the Larz Anderson House. In 2021, the couple announced they were going to have their first child. Abby Phillip is also an honorary member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
