About Abdalá Bucaram
His Family and Hometown
Abdalá Bucaram was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador. His father, Jacobo Bucaram Elmhalin, was the son of immigrants from Lebanon. His mother was Rina Ortiz Caicedo. Abdalá Bucaram's uncle, Assad Bucaram, was also a well-known politician and served as the mayor of Guayaquil. His sister, Martha Bucaram, was married to a former president, Jaime Roldós Aguilera.
A Sportsman and Leader
Bucaram loved playing football in the streets of Guayaquil when he was young. He became a successful athlete and even earned a degree in physical education. He was also a hurdler, which is a type of track and field event. He was chosen to carry the flag for Ecuador at the 1972 Summer Olympics. However, he could not compete in the Games because of an injury. He also served as the police chief for the Guayas area. Later, he became the president of Barcelona Sporting Club, a popular football team from his hometown.
His Political Journey
Starting in Politics
While working as a gym teacher, Abdalá Bucaram studied law and earned a law degree. Soon after, he began his career in politics. He became the mayor of Guayaquil. He also founded and became a member of the Ecuadorian Roldosist Party (PRE). He ran for president of Ecuador two times before, in 1988 and 1992, but he did not win those elections.
Becoming President
In the 1996 Ecuadorian general election, Bucaram ran for president again. He won against Social Christian Party (PSC) candidate Jaime Nebot. Bucaram won in almost all of Ecuador's 21 provinces, which was a big achievement. This made him the first person to win so widely across the country.
His Time as President
Abdalá Bucaram was president from August 10, 1996, to February 6, 1997. His vice president, Rosalía Arteaga, helped him choose the people for his government. Early in his presidency, some people in the media talked about his unusual and sometimes strong way of behaving. He was described as having a "messianic personality and unconventional" style.
Why He Left Office
In February 1997, the National Congress decided to remove Bucaram from his position as president. They had concerns about his ability to lead the country effectively. The reasons given for his removal included concerns about how he was managing the country's economy and his behavior while in office.
After the Presidency
After leaving office, Abdalá Bucaram lived outside Ecuador for a time. He later returned to Ecuador in 2017. He faced legal challenges related to his time in office. In 2022, the United States announced that he would not be allowed to enter their country due to concerns about his past actions in public office.
In more recent times, as of December 2023, Bucaram has started to share his political speeches in the video game Grand Theft Auto V. He streams these live on Twitch.tv.
