Abdurrahim Abdulhafiz El-Keib (born March 2, 1950 – died April 21, 2020) was an important person from Libya. He was a professor of electrical engineering and also a businessman. El-Keib served as the temporary Prime Minister of Libya from November 2011 to November 2012.
He was chosen for this role by Libya's National Transitional Council. This group was leading the country after a big change in government. The plan was for him to be replaced once a new elected government, called the General National Congress, took over. This new government started its work in August 2012.

Early Life and Moving Abroad
Abdurrahim El-Keib left Libya in 1976. He joined a group of people who were against the government at that time. Over the years, he helped raise money for this group. His family was well-known in Tripoli, the capital city. Even while he was living outside Libya, he would meet his family in nearby countries like Tunisia and Morocco.
His Journey in Education
El-Keib moved to Los Angeles, California, in the United States. There, he earned his master's degree in electrical engineering in 1976 from the University of Southern California. Later, he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, and got his doctorate degree in 1984 from North Carolina State University.
Teaching and Research
In 1985, he started teaching at the University of Alabama as a professor of electrical engineering. He became a full professor in 1996. He also taught at the University of Tripoli in Libya. El-Keib was an expert in how power systems work and how to plan for higher education.
From 1999 to 2001, he took a break from the University of Alabama. He went to lead the Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering department at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. In 2006, he moved to The Petroleum Institute in the UAE. There, he led the effort to create a graduate program. He stayed there until he joined the Libyan Transitional National Council in 2011.
El-Keib did a lot of research in electrical power engineering. He wrote many research papers and a book chapter. His work helped improve how power companies in the United States managed their electricity. He also advised several power companies.
In 2005, El-Keib started his own company, the Libyan International Company for Energy and Technology.
Community Involvement
For about 20 years, Abdurrahim El-Keib was a leader in the Islamic community in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He also took part in discussions between different religions.
He was married to Mawia Kaddoura. She was also a teacher at several universities, including the University of Alabama. Her father was once the president of the University of Libya and later a senator.
Becoming Prime Minister of Libya
On November 1, 2011, El-Keib was chosen as the temporary Prime Minister of Libya. He won 26 out of 51 votes from the National Transitional Council (NTC). Even though he sometimes had disagreements with the NTC, his government stayed in power. They successfully held national elections in 2012, which were fair and open. This was a big step for Libya.
Foreign Policy Efforts
During his time as Prime Minister, El-Keib spent a lot of effort on foreign policy. This means working with other countries. Libya improved its relationships with countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. El-Keib worked well with the United Nations and the European Union on issues important to Libya. He also wanted to work closely with Arab and Islamic countries.
He also worked to make sure countries in Africa, and big nations like Russia and China, knew that Libya wanted to have good relationships with them. These relationships were based on respect and shared benefits. His government organized a meeting for defense and security ministers from Libya's neighboring countries.
El-Keib spoke at the African Union and the UN security Council. He visited many important countries and welcomed foreign leaders to Tripoli. He wanted to show everyone that Libya was moving in the right direction. His efforts also helped Libya increase its oil production. It went from about 200,000 barrels per day to 1.6 million barrels per day. He also helped get Libyan money that was held in other countries released.
Death
Abdurrahim El-Keib passed away from a heart attack on April 21, 2020. He was 70 years old.
