Abel Hernández's Football Journey
Starting in Uruguay
Abel Hernández was nicknamed La Joya, which means 'The Jewel'. He began his professional career with Central Español in Uruguay. He quickly showed his talent by scoring five goals in his first four games. After this great start, he moved to Peñarol, another well-known Uruguayan club. His skills also earned him a spot on the Uruguayan Under-20 national team.
Playing in Italy with Palermo
On February 2, 2009, Abel Hernández joined Palermo, a club in Italy's top league, Serie A. He joined another Uruguayan player, Edinson Cavani, there. He made his first appearance for Palermo on March 15, 2009. He came into the game as a substitute in a 5–2 win against Lecce.
In the 2009–10 Serie A season, Hernández scored his first goal for Palermo. It was in a match against Internazionale. In the 2012–13 season, Palermo faced a tough time and was moved down to a lower league. The next season, 2013–14, Hernández scored 14 goals in 28 games in Serie B, helping Palermo get back to the top league.
Time in England with Hull City

On September 1, 2014, Hernández signed with the English club Hull City. He made his first appearance for Hull City two weeks later and scored his first goal in a 2–2 draw against West Ham United. He continued to score important goals for the team.
In May 2015, Hull City was moved down to a lower league after a draw with Manchester United. In January 2016, Hernández scored his first ever hat-trick (three goals in one game) for Hull City in a 6–0 win against Charlton Athletic. This great performance helped him win the Football League Championship Player of the Month award for January. At the end of that season, he was named Hull City's Player of the Year.
During the 2017–18 season, Hernández suffered a serious injury to his Achilles tendon, which kept him out of action for many months. He returned to play in March 2018 and scored in his first game back. He finished that season with eight goals in just ten games. After the season, he left Hull City when his contract ended.
Moving to Russia and Qatar
On August 1, 2018, Hernández joined CSKA Moscow, a club in the Russian Premier League. He quickly scored his first goal for them on August 11, 2018. He also played in a famous game where CSKA Moscow surprisingly beat Real Madrid 3–0 in the UEFA Champions League. After playing 15 games, he left CSKA Moscow in May 2019.
He then signed with Al Ahli SC in the Qatar Stars League. He hoped this move would help him get back into the national team.
Playing in Brazil
On August 28, 2020, Hernández joined Internacional, a club in Brazil's top league, Série A. He played there for a year before moving to another Brazilian club, Fluminense.
International Games for Uruguay

He was part of the Uruguayan team that won the 2011 Copa América in Argentina. He also played for the Uruguay Olympic team at the 2012 London Olympics.
In 2013, Hernández was chosen for Uruguay's team in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. In one match against Tahiti, he scored four goals, which is a rare achievement in such a big tournament! He was named the best player of that match. Hernández also played for Uruguay in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He continued to be a regular player for his country, including in the 2015 Copa América and Copa América Centenario.
However, after recovering from an injury, he was not selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup squad.
