Abel Hernández's Club Career
Starting Out in Uruguay
Abel Hernández was nicknamed La Joya, which means 'The Jewel'. He began his professional career with a Uruguayan team called Central Español. He quickly showed his talent by scoring five goals in his first four games. After that, he joined Peñarol, another club in Uruguay. His skills also earned him a spot on Uruguay's Under-20 national team.
Playing in Italy with Palermo
On February 2, 2009, Abel Hernández moved to Italy to play for Palermo, a club in Serie A. He joined another Uruguayan player, Edinson Cavani, there. Before he could play, he had a small surgery for a heart issue, but he recovered well.
He made his first game appearance for Palermo on March 15, 2009. He came on as a substitute in a big 5–2 win against Lecce. He also helped Palermo's under-19 team win a youth tournament in June 2009.
In the 2009–10 season, Abel scored his first goal for Palermo on October 29, 2009. It was in a tough 5–3 loss against Internazionale. In the 2012–13 season, Palermo was relegated to a lower league, but Abel helped them return to the top flight in the 2013–14 season. He scored 14 goals in 28 games that season, including two goals in two different away games.
Time at Hull City in England

On September 1, 2014, Abel Hernández joined the English club Hull City. He signed a three-year contract, and his transfer fee was a club record £10 million. He made his first appearance for Hull City two weeks later and scored his first goal in a 2–2 draw against West Ham United. He also scored against Manchester City and Arsenal.
Hull City was relegated from the Premier League on May 24, 2015. During a match against Manchester United, Abel was involved in an incident that led to him getting a three-match ban.
In the 2015–16 season, Abel had a fantastic game on January 16, 2016, against Charlton Athletic. He scored his first ever hat-trick (three goals in one game) in a huge 6–0 win. He scored six goals in four matches that month, earning him the "Football League Championship Player of the Month" award. At the end of that season, he was named Hull City's Player of the Year.
In January 2017, Abel missed two penalty kicks in a row during an FA Cup match against Fulham. The goalkeeper saved both of his attempts.
During the 2017–18 season, Abel suffered a serious injury to his Achilles tendon while playing against Wolverhampton Wanderers. This injury kept him out of action for many months. He returned on March 6, 2018, and even scored a goal in a 2–1 loss against Millwall. He finished that season with eight goals in just ten games.
After the 2017–18 season, Abel left Hull City because he couldn't agree on a new contract.
Moving to CSKA Moscow
On August 1, 2018, Abel Hernández joined CSKA Moscow, a club in the Russian Premier League. He signed a three-year contract. He scored his first goal for CSKA on August 11, 2018, from a penalty kick. In his next game, he scored again and helped his team win 3–0.
He also played as a substitute in CSKA's surprising 3–0 victory against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. This was a historic defeat for Real Madrid at home. However, due to injuries, Abel only played 15 games for CSKA. He left the club by mutual agreement on May 27, 2019.
Playing for Al Ahli and Brazilian Clubs
After leaving CSKA Moscow, Abel Hernández signed with Al Ahli SC in the Qatar Stars League. He hoped this move would help him get back into the national team.
