Abercrombie Mountain is a very tall peak located in the Selkirk Mountains. You can find it in the northeast part of Washington, within the Colville National Forest.
This mountain stands at 7,310 feet (2,228 m) high. It is the highest point in Stevens County. It is also the second highest peak in all of eastern Washington. Only Gypsy Peak is a little taller, by about 10 feet (3.0 m).
What Makes Abercrombie Mountain Special?
Abercrombie Mountain is known as an "ultra prominent peak." This means it rises very high above the land around it. Its prominence is 5,168 feet (1,575 m). Think of prominence as how much a mountain sticks up from its lowest connecting point to a higher peak.

Because of its great prominence, Abercrombie Mountain is one of the most prominent peaks in the entire United States. It ranks as the 7th most prominent peak in the state of Washington.
How Abercrombie Mountain Got Its Name
Abercrombie Mountain was named after a person named William R. Abercrombie. He was a Lieutenant who explored the nearby Pend Oreille River. He did his explorations in 1879 and again in 1883.
