Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam are three special Pokémon species in the Pokémon world. They are linked together because they are part of an evolution chain. This means one Pokémon changes into a stronger one.
Abra first evolves into Kadabra. This happens after Abra gains enough experience from battles. Then, Kadabra evolves into the powerful Alakazam. This final evolution happens when Kadabra is traded to another trainer.
These Pokémon were created by Ken Sugimori. They first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue. Since then, they have been in many other Pokémon games and shows. All three are known as "Psi Pokémon" because they use amazing psychic powers.

Meet Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam
Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam are Pokémon that look a bit like humans and foxes. They stand on two legs. They seem to wear armor, with pieces on their shoulders and around their chest. Each has three fingers on their hands and three toes on their feet.
Abra: The Sleeping Psychic
Abra is a very sleepy Pokémon. It spends about 18 hours a day sleeping! Even while asleep, Abra uses its extrasensory powers. It can read minds and sense danger. If it feels threatened, it can teleport away super fast. Abra can only use its full powers, like moving things with its mind (telekinesis), when it is rested.
Kadabra: The Strong Mind
When Abra evolves into Kadabra, it stops sleeping so much. Kadabra is a very strong psychic Pokémon. It gives off special brain waves called alpha waves. These waves can change depending on how Kadabra is feeling. Sometimes, these waves can even cause headaches for people nearby or make machines act strangely! Kadabra uses a spoon it creates with its mind to make its powers even stronger.
Alakazam: The Super Brain
Alakazam is the final and most powerful form. Its brain keeps growing, making its head very heavy. It has to use its psychic powers just to hold its head up! Alakazam can remember everything that has happened since it was born as an Abra. Its IQ (a measure of intelligence) is around 5,000. This means it is much smarter than even a supercomputer!
Alakazam has mastered every type of psychic ability. Like Kadabra, it uses two spoons it creates with its mind to boost its powers. It can make its powers even stronger by closing its eyes.
Mega Alakazam: Even More Power
Alakazam can also undergo a special change called Mega Evolution. When it Mega Evolves into Mega Alakazam, its appearance changes slightly. Its colors become lighter, and it grows a white beard. It also gets a red gem on its forehead. This gem helps it use even more powerful psychic energy. Mega Alakazam also gains three extra spoons, making it even stronger!
All three Pokémon can see into the future (precognition). They can also create special areas where battle rules might change.
Adventures with Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam
These Pokémon have appeared in many parts of the Pokémon franchise.
In Video Games
Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue. In the wild, Abra often tries to teleport away from battles right away!
As mentioned, Abra evolves into Kadabra with experience. Kadabra evolves into Alakazam when traded to another trainer. These Pokémon have been in almost every main Pokémon game since.
Many important trainers use these Pokémon. For example, Sabrina, the Gym Leader of Saffron City, uses them. Blue, your rival in Pokémon Red and Blue, also has them. Other trainers like Silver, Anabel, and Lucian also use them.
Outside of the main games, Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam have appeared in games like Pokémon Pinball, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and Pokémon Ranger. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Alakazam is a big helper in the story. It leads a rescue team with Tyranitar and Charizard. Abra even appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Poké Ball Pokémon, using Teleport to warp fighters off the stage!
In the Anime Series
In the Pokémon anime, Ash battles Sabrina, the Saffron City Gym Leader. Sabrina uses her Abra, which then evolves into Kadabra during the battle! Kadabra's new powers are so strong that Ash has to give up the match.
Later, Ash returns for a rematch. His Haunter makes Sabrina laugh. Because Sabrina and Kadabra are connected by psychic powers, Kadabra also starts laughing and cannot fight. This allows Ash to win the gym badge.
Abra also appears with a trainer named Mira. She uses her Abra to teleport people. Alakazam first appeared as a giant Pokémon awakened near ancient ruins. Many other trainers in the anime, like Luana and Anabel, have also owned Alakazam.
In Comic Books (Manga)
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Abra makes a small appearance when it is stolen. Later, a character named Red helps free kidnapped Pokémon. The owner of the stolen Abra is surprised to find an Alakazam instead of his cute Abra!
Like in the anime, Sabrina also owns a Kadabra in the manga. Blue and Green also have these Pokémon in their teams, using their powerful psychic abilities in battles.
