Abraham Dowdney (born October 31, 1841 – died December 10, 1886) was an important person in American history. He served as a Representative for New York State. He was also an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Abraham Dowdney was born in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland. When he was young, he moved to the United States with his parents. They made their new home in New York City.
Early Life and Military Service
Abraham went to private schools when he was growing up. Later, he worked in the building and construction business.
When the American Civil War started, he joined the Union Army. This was the army that fought to keep the United States together. He became a captain in the 132nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He served in the army during 1862 and 1863. His regiment mainly fought in Virginia and North Carolina.
A Career in Public Service
After his time in the army, Abraham Dowdney continued to serve his community. From 1882 to 1885, he was the chairman of the public school trustees in New York City. This meant he helped make important decisions about the city's public schools.
In 1885, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the 49th Congress starting on March 4, 1885.
Abraham Dowdney passed away in New York City on December 10, 1886. He was 45 years old. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Long Island City.
