Abubakar Magomedovich Nurmagomedov (born on November 13, 1989) is a Russian mixed martial artist. He used to compete in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He also fought in the Professional Fighters League (PFL). Abubakar has won bronze medals three times at the Combat Sambo World Championships. He was also a Russian national combat sambo champion.

Early Life and Training
Abubakar Nurmagomedov was born in a village called Goksuv in Dagestan. This was on November 13, 1989. When he was in primary school, Abubakar started training in freestyle wrestling. After finishing high school, he began to train in Combat Sambo. His coach was Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. In 2014, he earned a bronze medal at the Combat Sambo World Championships.
Mixed Martial Arts Journey
Starting His Career
Abubakar Nurmagomedov had his first professional MMA fight in October 2011. He won this fight by using a submission move called an armbar. Later, he had a fight at the Sochi Star tournament where he lost by technical knockout.
Sambo Achievements
Abubakar earned third place in several world combat sambo tournaments. He competed against famous fighters like Yaroslav Amosov, Pavel Kusch, and Eldar Eldarov.
Fighting in WSOF
In March 2015, Nurmagomedov signed a contract with World Series of Fighting (WSOF). He won his first fight in WSOF in August 2015. He beat Jorge Moreno by a unanimous decision.
He continued his winning streak in WSOF. In December 2015, he won against Danny Davis Jr. by unanimous decision. In April 2016, he won another fight by TKO (technical knockout). He also defeated John Howard and Matt Secor by unanimous decision in 2016 and 2017.
Professional Fighters League (PFL)
Abubakar then joined the PFL welterweight Grand-Prix. In July 2018, he faced Pavel Kusch and lost by submission. However, he bounced back and won against Jonatan Westin in August 2018. This win was by unanimous decision.
In October 2018, he entered the Welterweight Tournament. He fought Bojan Veličković in the quarter-final. The fight ended in a draw, but Abubakar moved forward because he won the first round. Unfortunately, he had to leave the tournament due to a hand injury.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)
Nurmagomedov made his UFC debut in November 2019. He lost his first UFC fight to David Zawada by submission.
He returned to the UFC in March 2021 and won against Jared Gooden. This win was by unanimous decision. He was supposed to fight Daniel Rodriguez in July 2021, but he had to pull out due to an injury.
In July 2022, a fight against Philip Rowe was planned. But it was canceled because both fighters had issues. Rowe was injured, and Nurmagomedov had problems with his visa.
Abubakar fought Gadzhi Omargadzhiev in October 2022. He won this fight by unanimous decision. In March 2023, he was set to fight Carlston Harris. But Abubakar withdrew for unknown reasons and was replaced by Jared Gooden.
His last UFC fight was in June 2023 against Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos. He lost this fight by a split decision. In February 2024, it was announced that Abubakar had left the UFC.
Global Fight League
In December 2024, it was announced that Abubakar Nurmagomedov signed with the Global Fight League.
