Abubakar Magomedovich Nurmagomedov (born November 13, 1989) is a Russian mixed martial artist. He used to compete in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He also fought in the Professional Fighters League (PFL). Abubakar is known for winning three bronze medals at the Combat Sambo World Championships. He was also a Russian national combat sambo champion.

Early Life and Training
Abubakar Nurmagomedov was born on November 13, 1989. His hometown is Goksuv in Khasavyurtovsky District, Dagestan, Russia. When he was in primary school, Abubakar started training in freestyle wrestling. After finishing high school, he began to train in Combat Sambo. His coach was Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. In 2014, he earned a bronze medal at the Combat Sambo World Championships.
Mixed Martial Arts Journey
Abubakar Nurmagomedov began his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career in October 2011. His first fight was against Ibrahim Dzhantukhanov from Russia. Abubakar won this fight in the first round by using a submission move called an armbar.
World Combat Sambo Achievements
Abubakar earned third place in several world combat sambo tournaments. He competed against famous fighters like Yaroslav Amosov, Pavel Kusch, and Eldar Eldarov.
Fighting in World Series of Fighting
In March 2015, Nurmagomedov signed a contract with the World Series of Fighting (WSOF). He had a great start, winning his first fight against Jorge Moreno on August 1, 2015. He won by a unanimous decision.
He continued his winning streak in WSOF. He defeated Danny Davis Jr. in December 2015. In April 2016, he won against Matthew Frincu by TKO (technical knockout). He also beat John Howard in October 2016 and Matt Secor in March 2017. All these wins were by unanimous decision, showing his strong performance.
Competing in Professional Fighters League
Abubakar then joined the Professional Fighters League (PFL) welterweight tournament. In July 2018, he faced Pavel Kusch and lost by submission. However, he bounced back in August 2018, winning against Jonatan Westin by unanimous decision.
In October 2018, Abubakar entered the PFL Welterweight Tournament quarter-finals. He fought Bojan Veličković. The fight ended in a draw, but Abubakar moved forward because he won the first round. Unfortunately, he had to leave the tournament due to a hand injury.
Time in the Ultimate Fighting Championship
Nurmagomedov made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on November 9, 2019. His first UFC fight was against David Zawada, which he lost by submission in the first round.
He got his first UFC win on March 27, 2021, at UFC 260. He defeated Jared Gooden by unanimous decision. Abubakar was scheduled for other fights, but some were canceled due to injuries or visa problems.
On October 22, 2022, at UFC 280, he won another fight against Gadzhi Omargadzhiev by unanimous decision. His last fight in the UFC was on June 3, 2023, against Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos, which he lost by split decision. In February 2024, it was announced that Abubakar had left the UFC.
Global Fight League
In December 2024, Abubakar Nurmagomedov signed with the Global Fight League (GFL). He was set to fight Louis Glisman in May 2025. However, all GFL events were later canceled.
