What's in a Name?
Adams Center was first known as "Adams Five Corners". This name came from a special crossroad in the middle of town. Five different roads met at this spot. The name "Adams Five Corners" was used until at least 1828.
Later, the community's name changed to "Adams Centre". This spelling was common until around the year 1900. After that, it became "Adams Center" as we know it today.

The community of Adams Center started around the year 1816. This was when the first settlers began to build homes and businesses there. A very important event happened in 1852. A railroad line was finished, connecting Adams Center to other places. This made it easier for people and goods to travel.

Roads and Travel
Several important roads go through Adams Center. These include U.S. Route 11, County Roads 66 and 76, and New York State Route 177. Also, Interstate 81 runs along the western side of the community. You can get onto I-81 from Exit 42.
- Both US-11 and I-81 go north about 10 miles (16 km) to Watertown. Watertown is the main city and county seat for Jefferson County.
- US-11 goes south about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to the village of Adams.
- I-81 continues south about 60 miles (97 km) to Syracuse, a much larger city.
- NY-177 heads east across the Tug Hill Plateau. It goes about 24 miles (39 km) to West Lowville.
