Early Life and Education
Adib Boroumand was born on June 11, 1924. His father was a historian and writer. His mother loved learning and culture. Adib learned to read and write at age six. He started school at eight and earned his high school diploma. He focused on literature during his studies.
He began writing prose, which is like regular writing, at age sixteen. Soon, he started writing poems. He was especially interested in poems written by people who supported constitutional government.
Political Journey
Adib Boroumand started his political work during the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran. He wrote poems about Iranian nationalism, which means a strong love for his country. He spoke out against the rule of Reza Shah, calling it a dictatorship. He also criticized the invading forces. His poems promoted patriotism and were printed in Tehran's newspapers.
His first book, Groaning of Homeland, became very popular. This book helped him earn the title "National Poet of Iran."
After the war, Adib earned a law degree from the University of Tehran. He also studied literature and learned French and Arabic. He started writing about the need for changes in Persia. He met many politicians and joined political parties. His second book, Iran Opera in Tumult, talked about the difficult conditions in the country.
Adib chose to become an independent lawyer. He even worked for the Iranian national bank. He turned down offers to work in the government.
During the Iran crisis of 1946, Adib became active in politics again. He wrote against certain political groups, even though he had previously been close to some communist groups.
Supporting Mohammad Mosaddegh
Adib Boroumand strongly supported Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. Mosaddegh led a movement to take control of Iran's oil industry from foreign companies. Many Iranians supported this idea. Adib wrote many poems to support Mosaddegh. His poems were used to spread messages. They were read on the radio and printed on paper leaflets.
During the 1953 Iranian coup d'état, Adib and the National Front fought against the new government. He called Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's rule a "dictatorship." Because of his strong views, he was sent to prison three times.
In 1960, he became a key member of the National Front. He called for a revolution for change. He joined a sit-in protest against "lack of freedom." The people who participated were jailed. Later, Adib was chosen as one of five leaders when the National Front was reorganized. They held protests, but the government stopped them. After that, they had to hold their meetings in secret.
After the Iranian Revolution, Adib was elected leader of the National Front in 2000. He worked to promote freedom and democracy in Iran. He also started a "culture house" in his hometown. In 2008, he gave a special version of the Quran to the National Library of Iran. He also founded the "Adib Boroumand Art School." During this time, he wrote a book called Worrisome Days.
