Adolescence is a British television show created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham. The story is about a 13-year-old boy named Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who is arrested after a girl in his school dies.
A special thing about this show is that each of its four episodes was filmed in one single, continuous take. This means the camera never stops rolling from the beginning to the end of the episode.
Adolescence was released on Netflix on 13 March 2025. It was praised by critics for its directing, writing, and camera work. The show won several major awards, including the Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series.

How the Show Was Made
Getting the Idea
Creator Stephen Graham was inspired by real-life stories of serious problems involving teenagers in the United Kingdom. He wanted to make a show that explored why some young boys commit very serious acts. He worked with writer Jack Thorne to create the story.
Thorne said they wanted to look at the anger some boys feel today and how they can be influenced by certain online figures. However, the story in Adolescence is fictional and not based on any single true event.
Filming Style
The director, Philip Barantini, is known for filming in one continuous shot. He and Stephen Graham had worked together on a movie called Boiling Point (2021), which was also filmed this way. This technique makes the show feel very real and intense, as if you are in the room with the characters.
Each hour-long episode was filmed about 10 times to get the perfect take. The camera follows the actors without any cuts or edits. This required a lot of planning and practice from the cast and crew.
Where It Was Filmed
Adolescence was filmed in several locations in Yorkshire, England, including the towns of South Kirkby and Sheffield. The school scenes were filmed at Minsthorpe Community College. A special set was built for the police station scenes to make the complex single-shot filming possible.
Release and Success
The series was released on Netflix on 13 March 2025. It quickly became very popular and was the most-watched streaming show in the United Kingdom in a single week.
In its first three weeks, Adolescence was viewed 96.7 million times around the world. It ranked in the top 10 most-watched shows in all 93 countries that Netflix tracks. This success made it one of Netflix's most-watched shows of all time.
