Aerospace Walk of Honor facts for kids
The Aerospace Walk of Honor is a special place in Lancaster, California, USA. It celebrates amazing test pilots who helped make flying and space travel better. These brave pilots pushed the limits of aircraft and spacecraft.
The City of Lancaster started the Aerospace Walk of Honor awards in 1990. They wanted to honor pilots who were truly unique and talented. Lancaster is a great place for this because it's close to several important flight test centers. These include US Air Force Plant 42, Edwards AFB, Mojave Air and Space Port, and Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. The Walk of Honor program finished giving out new awards in August 2009.
The Walk of Honor is found on Lancaster Boulevard. It stretches between Sierra Highway and 10th Street West. At one end is Boeing Plaza, which has a cool, restored F-4 Phantom II jet on display. Each honored pilot has a special granite monument along the boulevard. These monuments tell you about the pilots and their achievements.
Many aerospace companies help pay for the Walk of Honor. These include Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman. All these companies do flight testing in the area.
