Aerospace Walk of Honor facts for kids
The Aerospace Walk of Honor is a special place in Lancaster, California, USA. It celebrates amazing test pilots who helped make aviation and space travel better. These brave pilots pushed the limits of flight!
What is the Walk of Honor?
The City of Lancaster started the Aerospace Walk of Honor in 1990. Their goal was to "recognize the important contributions of unique and talented aviators who soared above the rest." It's like a hall of fame for pilots!
Lancaster is in the Antelope Valley. This area is perfect for flight testing. It is close to four big flight test places:
- US Air Force Plant 42
- Edwards AFB
- Mojave Air and Space Port
- Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake
The Walk of Honor program officially ended in August 2009.
Where to Find It
The Walk of Honor is on Lancaster Boulevard. You can find it between Sierra Highway and 10th Street West. It starts at Boeing Plaza. Boeing Plaza has a cool, restored F-4 Phantom II airplane on display.
Along Lancaster Boulevard, you will see granite monuments. Each monument honors a test pilot. These pilots were chosen each year in late summer.
Who Supports the Walk?
Many aerospace companies helped pay for the Walk of Honor. These include Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman. All these companies do flight testing in the Antelope Valley.
