Afon Ddu means black river in Welsh. It's the name for several different rivers found in Snowdonia, a beautiful area in north-west Wales.

Exploring the Afon Ddu Rivers

The Afon Ddu from Llyn Cowlyd

This is the longest of the Afon Ddu rivers. It starts its journey from Llyn Cowlyd, a lake on the south-eastern side of the Carneddau mountains. The river then flows to join the larger River Conwy.

Along its path, this Afon Ddu passes Pont Dolgarrog, a bridge on the B5106 road. This is just south of the village of Dolgarrog.

A Special Gorge

The river has carved a deep gorge in this area. This gorge is a popular spot for an activity called "gorge walking." This is where people explore the river by walking, scrambling, and sometimes swimming through the gorge.

The area around this part of the river is also very special for nature. It's a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This means it's protected because it has important broadleaved woodlands and several types of rare plants. 53°10′51″N 3°49′58″W / 53.18083°N 3.83278°W / 53.18083; -3.83278

The Afon Ddu near Drum

Another Afon Ddu is a stream that flows down the south-eastern slopes of two mountains: Drum and Foel-fras. These mountains are also part of the Carneddau mountain range. This stream is a smaller river that feeds into the Afon Dulyn, which then flows into the River Conwy.

The Afon Ddu from Bwlch y Ddeufaen

A third Afon Ddu is a stream that starts flowing north-west from a place called Bwlch-y-Ddeufaen. This stream joins another river, the Afon Llanfairfechan, right before it reaches the village of Llanfairfechan.

The Afon Ddu in Dysynni Valley

There is also an Afon Ddu that is a smaller river feeding into the River Dysynni. This river is found in the northern part of the Dysynni Valley. This valley is well-known for a famous rock formation called Craig y Deryn.
