Afton is a small village located in Chenango County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 794 people lived there.
The village got its name from a famous poem called "Sweet Afton". This poem was written by a Scottish poet named Robert Burns. It talks about the River Afton in Ayrshire, Scotland. Afton village is part of the larger town of Afton. It is located northeast of the city of Binghamton.

Afton's History
The very first settlement in the area that is now Afton happened around 1786. This was close to where the village stands today.
Early Settlers and Famous Homes
An early settler named Ebenezer Landers built a home on the east side of the Susquehanna River. Later, a famous history professor from Columbia University, Dr. Carlton J. H. Hayes, bought this home. He was also the United States ambassador to Spain during World War II.
Dr. Hayes added a special entrance, called a Pillard Portico, to the house. This building is still standing today and is known as the Jericho Farm.
Historic Places in Afton
In 1983, a special area in the village, called the Main Street Historic District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important place recognized for its history.
Afton's Geography
Afton village is located right in the middle of the town of Afton. Its exact location is at 42°13′45″N 75°31′29″W / 42.22917°N 75.52472°W. This is in the southern part of Chenango County.
Land and Water
The village covers an area of about 4.1 square kilometers (1.6 square miles). Most of this area, about 3.95 square kilometers (1.53 square miles), is land. The rest, about 0.19 square kilometers (0.07 square miles), is water. The important Susquehanna River flows right through the village.
Roads and Travel
Interstate 88 runs just east of Afton. You can get to the village from Exit 7. The main part of Afton is where two state roads meet: NY Route 7 and NY Route 41.
From Afton, Binghamton is about 26 miles (42 km) to the southwest. Oneonta is about 33 miles (53 km) to the northeast. Another road, County Road 30, also crosses NY-41 in the village.
