Agostino Barbarigo was an important leader in Venice, Italy. He was born on June 3, 1419, and passed away on September 20, 1501. From 1486 until his death, he held the title of Doge of Venice. The Doge was the chief ruler of the Republic of Venice, similar to a president or king.
During his time as Doge, Venice saw some big changes. A famous building called the Clock Tower was finished. It stands in the Piazza San Marco, a main square in Venice. This tower has an archway that leads to a street called the Merceria. Originally, a statue of Doge Barbarigo was on the tower, kneeling before the lion of Venice. But this statue was removed in 1797.
In 1495, Agostino Barbarigo helped create a group of Italian states. Their goal was to push Charles VIII of France out of Italy. This led to a battle called the Battle of Fornovo. It happened when the French army was leaving Italy. During his rule, Venice also gained control of new areas. They took over several strongholds in Romagna and added the island of Cyprus to their territory.
At first, Doge Barbarigo had a good relationship with the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II. But things became difficult starting in 1492. This eventually led to a war in 1499. Venetian merchants in Istanbul were arrested. Troops from Bosnia invaded Dalmatia and reached Zara. The Venetian fleet, which was their navy, lost a big battle called the Battle of Zonchio.
Because of this defeat, Venice lost important bases. They lost Lepanto, then Modone and Corone. These places were key stops for Venetian ships sailing to the East.
Even though Agostino Barbarigo didn't agree with it, Venice signed a deal in February 1499. It was called the Treaty of Blois. This deal created a military alliance with Louis XII of France. They teamed up against their old rival, the Duchy of Milan. Barbarigo thought this alliance was a distraction from the bigger threat of the Ottomans. A peace treaty was signed in 1503. After the war, Venice only kept Nafplion, Patras, and Monemvasia in Morea.
Agostino Barbarigo's wife was Elisabetta Soranzo. His brother, Marco Barbarigo, was Doge before him. But Marco only held the position for less than a year. Their tomb was once in a church called the Carita. It has since been taken apart. A part of it, a stone carving showing the "Resurrection of Christ," is now in the Scuola di San Giovanni Evangelista. It is thought to be made by artists from Antonio Rizzo's workshop.
