A Look Back at Agoura's History
Agoura has a cool history! Long ago, it was a stop for stagecoaches, known as "Vegar Junction." In the 1920s, it was even called "Picture City" for a short time. This was because Paramount Pictures owned the Paramount Ranch nearby. They used this ranch to film outdoor scenes for movies, especially Western movies.
How Agoura Got Its Name
To get its own post office, the Postal Service needed the community to pick a single-word name. In 1927, the people chose the last name of Pierre Agoure. Pierre was a French Basque immigrant who moved to the area in 1871. He lived like a "Californio" rancher. His name was chosen for the post office because it was the shortest name suggested. It's not known if the spelling change (from Agoure to Agoura) was a mistake or to make it easier to say.
Agoura Hills Becomes a City
In 1982, the city of Agoura Hills was officially created. The parts of the area that were not included in the new city are still known as Agoura. These are the "unincorporated areas" we mentioned earlier.
