Agustín Maravall Herrero (born in 1944 in Madrid) is a Spanish economist. He is famous for his work with statistics and economic data. He helped create special computer programs. These programs help people around the world understand economic information better. Mr. Maravall stopped working at the Bank of Spain in December 2014.

About Agustín Maravall

Agustín Maravall grew up in Paris for a time. Later, he moved to Madrid and finished high school there. He studied agricultural engineering at the Technical University of Madrid. After that, he worked for the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture.

He then received a special scholarship. This allowed him to study in the United States. He earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 1975, he started working in Washington, D.C. at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

His Career Journey

In 1979, Mr. Maravall returned to Madrid. He became a senior economist at the Bank of Spain. Later, in 1989, he moved to Italy. There, he became a full professor at the European University Institute in Florence.

He came back to the Bank of Spain in 1996. He worked as the Chief Economist. He also led the team that analyzed time series data. Time series data is information collected over time, like how prices change each month.

Mr. Maravall was part of many important groups. He helped guide several professional journals. He also advised the European Central Bank and Eurostat. He taught courses in more than 30 countries.

His Research Work

Mr. Maravall's main research was about time series analysis. This means studying data that changes over time. He wanted to find better ways to understand economic information.

He worked with another economist, Victor Gómez. Together, they created a new way to solve many problems with economic data. Their method helps to find hidden patterns in data. For example, it can find seasonal changes, like how sales go up during holidays.

How His Method Works

Their method uses a special model. This model helps to break down complex data. It can separate different parts of the data. These parts include seasonal changes or long-term trends.

This method is very useful for two reasons. First, all the information from a data set stays connected. This makes the results very clear. Second, the method works automatically. This means it can be used quickly on lots of data.

His research has been published in many books and journals. This shows how important his work is in the field of economics.

Computer Programs for Data

Mr. Maravall's research led to useful computer programs. He worked with Víctor Gómez and Gianluca Caporello. These programs help people use his methods easily.

The main programs are called TRAMO and SEATS.

  • TRAMO helps to clean up data. It can find missing information or mistakes.
  • SEATS helps to find hidden patterns in data. It can separate seasonal changes from other trends.

These programs are used all over the world. They help governments and banks understand economic data. For example, they help create official reports on how the economy is doing.

Programs in Use Today

The United States Census Bureau uses parts of TRAMO. They have their own program called X13-ARIMA-SEATS. This program uses the ideas from Mr. Maravall's work.

In Europe, many countries use a program called JDEMETRA+. This program also includes TRAMO and SEATS. It helps European countries analyze their economic data. You can even get TRAMO and SEATS for free from the Bank of Spain.
