Ahmed Aboul Gheit (born 12 June 1942) is an important Egyptian politician and diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in talks with other countries. He has been the Secretary-General of the Arab League since July 2016. The Arab League is a group of Arab countries that work together on common goals.

Before this role, Aboul Gheit was Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2011. He also served as Egypt's main representative to the United Nations from 1999 to 2004. He was given the French Legion d'Honneur, a high award, in 2002.

Early Life and Education

Ahmed Aboul Gheit was born in Heliopolis, a part of Cairo, Egypt, on 12 June 1942. He went to Ain Shams University in Cairo, where he studied business.

Starting a Diplomatic Career

Aboul Gheit began his career as a diplomat in 1965 after finishing university. He worked his way up in the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He held different diplomatic jobs in cities like Rome, Nicosia, Moscow, and New York.

In 1978, he helped with the negotiations for the Camp David Accords. These talks led to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. In 1999, he became Egypt's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. This meant he was Egypt's top diplomat at the UN. In 2004, he returned to Cairo to take on a bigger role in diplomacy.

Serving as Foreign Minister

Ahmed Aboul Gheit was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt from 11 July 2004 to 6 March 2011. In this role, he was in charge of Egypt's relationships with other countries.

In December 2005, he helped try to solve a conflict between Chad and Sudan. In 2006, he spoke about his views on comments made by Pope Benedict XVI regarding Islam. In December 2010, he opened an Egyptian consulate in Erbil, Iraq, and met with the Iraqi President. After President Hosni Mubarak was removed from power in February 2011, Aboul Gheit left his job as foreign minister.

Leading the Arab League

In March 2016, Ahmed Aboul Gheit was chosen to be the Secretary-General of the Arab League. He took over from Nabil el-Arabi. His term officially started on 3 July 2016. He was chosen for a second term in March 2021.

In 2019, Aboul Gheit said that a military action by Turkey in Syria was a clear violation of Syria's independence. In May 2021, he described Israeli air strikes on Gaza as not careful and irresponsible.
