Ahmed Aboul Gheit is an important Egyptian politician and diplomat. He was born on 12 June 1942. Since July 2016, he has been the Secretary-General of the Arab League. This is a group of Arab countries working together. He was chosen for a second time in March 2021.
Before this, Aboul Gheit was the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Egypt. He held this job from July 2004 to March 2011. He also worked as Egypt's representative to the United Nations from 1999 to 2004. After President Hosni Mubarak left office in 2011, Nabil Elaraby took over as Foreign Minister. In March 2016, Aboul Gheit was elected to lead the Arab League. His term started in July 2016. In 2002, he received a high award from France called the Legion d'Honneur.

About Ahmed Aboul Gheit
Ahmed Aboul Gheit was born in Heliopolis, a part of Cairo, on 12 June 1942. He studied business at Ain Shams University in Cairo.
His Diplomatic Career
Aboul Gheit started working as a diplomat in 1965 after finishing university. He moved up in the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He worked in different countries like Rome, Nicosia, Moscow, and New York.
In 1978, he helped with talks for the Camp David Accords. These talks led to a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. In 1999, he became Egypt's main representative to the United Nations. Then, in 2004, he was called back to Cairo to become the Foreign Minister.
Earlier in his career, he worked at the Egyptian Embassy in Cyprus. He was also a political advisor at the Egyptian Embassy in the Soviet Union in 1984. Later, he became Egypt's Ambassador to Italy, Macedonia, and San Marino.
As Foreign Minister
Ahmed Aboul Gheit served as Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 11 July 2004 to 6 March 2011. In December 2005, he helped try to solve a conflict between Chad and Sudan.
On 26 December 2010, Aboul Gheit opened Egypt's first consulate outside Baghdad. This was in the city of Erbil. He also met with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani there.
After Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was removed from power in February 2011, Aboul Gheit left the foreign ministry. He then wrote books about his experiences.
Leading the Arab League
In March 2016, Ahmed Aboul Gheit was chosen to be the Secretary-General of the Arab League. He took over from Nabil el-Arabi. His job officially started on 3 July 2016.
In 2019, Aboul Gheit said that Turkey's actions in northeastern Syria were a clear violation of Syria's independence. In May 2021, he also spoke out about Israeli air strikes on Gaza. He called them careless and not specific enough.
