The Ahmedabad district is a part of the state of Gujarat in western India. It includes the big city of Ahmedabad. This district is very important because it is the most populated district in Gujarat and the 8th most populated in all of India!

The Story Behind the Name

The area where Ahmedabad district is located has a long history. It was first settled around the 11th century and was known as Ashaval.

Later, a ruler named Karna from the Chaulukya dynasty won a war against the Bhil king of Ashaval. He then built a new city on the banks of the Sabarmati River and called it Karnavati, named after himself.

In 1411, a Sultan named Ahmed Shah took control of this region. He decided to build a new capital city near Karnavati. He named this new city Ahmedabad, after himself. Some stories say he named it after four holy Muslim leaders in the area, all of whom were also named Ahmed.
