Aimyon's Musical Journey
Aimyon was inspired to become a singer because her grandmother wanted to be a singer or actress. Her father is also an audio engineer, so she grew up surrounded by music. She started writing songs when she was in middle school.
Learning to Play Guitar
When Aimyon was in her second year of middle school, her father gave her an electric guitar. She really wanted an acoustic guitar, so she stopped playing after less than a month. Later, in her third year of middle school, an English teacher left her an acoustic guitar. Aimyon taught herself to play using an instruction book. She practiced by playing songs by famous Japanese artists like Yutaka Ozaki and Spitz.
Starting High School and Beyond
Aimyon began writing songs in her first year of high school. A friend uploaded a video of her performing a song on YouTube. This was her first public performance. Her friends also secretly sent her application to an audition, and she made it to the final rounds!
After high school, a video of her performance on YouTube caught the attention of a music label called Lastrum. This meant she didn't have to perform on the streets or in small music venues to get noticed.
Becoming a Professional Artist
In 2014, Aimyon met Ryoma Suzuki from Unborde, another music label. She wanted to become an artist who would be loved for a long time. So, she decided to release her first songs with an indie label first, as a test. She also started training, including practicing her live performances. Her producer, Junichi Hoshino, asked her to write 50 songs before officially joining the agency. By the time she made her official debut, she had written about 130 demo songs!
On February 4, 2015, she started her career as a lyricist, writing a song called "Time Goes By" for the group Johnny's West. On March 4, she released her first indie single, "Anata Kaibō Jun'aika ~Shine~". This song was only sold at Tower Records. Its strong lyrics made it very popular, even though TV and radio stations didn't play it much. It reached number 10 on the Oricon Indies Weekly Chart. Later that year, she released her first mini-album, tamago, and a second mini-album, Nikumarekko Yo ni Habakaru.
Major Debut and Growing Fame
In 2016, Aimyon was chosen by Space Shower TV as one of the top new artists to watch. She performed at the Space Shower New Force event. On April 10, she performed for 8,000 people at a big event celebrating Unborde's fifth anniversary. On November 30, she released her first major label single, "Ikite Itanda yona," under Unborde. This song was chosen by the Unborde staff as her debut single. It was also used as the theme song for a TV drama. Fans even started calling November 30 "Aimyon Day."
In 2017, Aimyon released "Kimi wa Rock wo Kikanai." This song became very popular on 42 radio stations across Japan, setting a new record. On September 13, she released her first full album, Seishun no Excitement, which sold well for over two years.
International Performances and Hit Songs
In April 2018, Aimyon sang a campaign song called "Bookmark" for FM802. On June 22, she had her first concert outside Japan in Taipei, Taiwan. About one thousand people came to watch her perform. On August 8, she released her fifth single, "Marigold." This song was a huge hit, staying at number 1 on the streaming charts for 20 weeks! She also wrote and composed a song for a drama called Onryou o Agero Tako! Nani Utatteten noga Zenzen Wakaneendayo!!. On December 31, she performed "Marigold" on the famous Kōhaku Uta Gassen TV show for the first time.
In 2019, Aimyon released "Ra, no Hanashi," the theme song for the animated movie Ashita Sekai ga Owaru to Shitemo. On April 17, she released her seventh single, "Harunohi," which was the theme song for Crayon Shin-chan: Honeymoon Hurricane ~The Lost Hiroshi~. She also wrote songs for the film Sayonara Kuchibiru. From October, she went on a big tour called "Aimyon Tour 2019: Sixth Sense Story."
In 2020, she hosted a special radio show called "Aimyon's All Night Nippon."
In November 2022, it was announced that she would sing the theme song for the TV show Ranman in 2023. This was special because she was the first solo artist born after the Heisei era began to sing a theme song for this type of TV show.
On December 8, 2024, it was announced that Aimyon would sing the theme song for the movie Doraemon: Nobita's Art World Tales. This was the first time in 10 years that a female solo artist sang a Doraemon movie theme song. She is also one of only three artists to sing theme songs for both the Crayon Shin-chan and Doraemon films series.
Aimyon will also sing "Ichi ni tsuite," the theme song for the July 2025 drama The 19th Medical Chart.
Aimyon's Artistic Style
Aimyon is influenced by many artists, including Spitz, Shōgo Hamada, Takuro Yoshida, and Yutaka Ozaki. She likes male singer-songwriters who choose interesting words and focus on lyrics more than melodies. She especially enjoys folk songs.
Aimyon often writes songs from a male point of view. She likes how men can be very dedicated to the women they like.
She was inspired by the movie Crayon Shin-chan: Fierceness That Invites Storm! The Adult Empire Strikes Back. After watching it, she became interested in the Tower of the Sun and artist Tarō Okamoto. She even dreams of singing under the Tower of the Sun one day.
Aimyon says she hasn't fully decided on her musical style or genre yet. When she creates songs, she starts with her lyrics and a guitar demo. Other producers then help expand her ideas. She believes her strength as a singer-songwriter comes from her guitar and voice.
Aimyon's Impact
Music experts have praised Aimyon's unique style. Tomonori Shiba said that Aimyon is a true successor to famous Japanese bands like Misu-Chiru and Spitz. Aimyon has also said that she was one of the first big stars to become famous through streaming music services.
Many other artists and public figures are fans of Aimyon, including voice actor Wasabi Mizuta and bassist OKP-STAR from the band Aqua Timez.
Aimyon's Life
Aimyon's stage name, "Aimyon," was a nickname given to her by a friend. In Taiwan, she releases her music under the name "愛繆" (Àimóu).
Aimyon was born in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture. She is the second of six children in her family. Her parents were both 21 when she was born. Her older and younger sisters each have four children, and her grandmother has 28 grandchildren and great-grandchildren!
In middle school, she was part of the track and field club. She didn't like studying much and left high school early. Her favorite food is ikura (salmon roe), but she doesn't like fish or mushrooms. She loves animals and used to visit Ueno Zoo often. She looks up to her father as her ideal type. Aimyon also enjoys watching Doraemon and Castle in the Sky.
