Aimyon's Music Journey
Aimyon was inspired to become a singer and songwriter by her family. Her grandmother wanted to be a singer or actress, and her father worked with sound. She grew up with music and started writing songs in middle school.
She began writing lyrics in her second year of middle school. Around that time, her father gave her an electric guitar. But she really wanted an acoustic guitar, so she stopped playing after less than a month. In her third year of middle school, an English teacher left her an acoustic guitar when they moved away. Aimyon taught herself to play using an instruction book. She learned by playing songs by artists like Yutaka Ozaki and Spitz.
Aimyon started writing her own songs in her first year of high school. While still in school, she appeared on a music show that a friend uploaded to YouTube. This was her first public performance. She also made it to the final rounds of an audition that her friends secretly signed her up for.
After high school, a video of her performing on YouTube caught the eye of her first music label, Lastrum Music Entertainment. This meant she didn't have to perform on the streets or in small music venues to get noticed.
In 2014, Aimyon met Ryoma Suzuki from Unborde. She wanted to become an artist who would be loved for a long time, not just quickly famous. So, her first songs were released by an indie (independent) label as a test. She also started training, including live performances. Her producer, Junichi Hoshino, told her to write 50 songs before officially joining the agency. By the time she made her big debut, she had about 130 demo songs!
On February 4, 2015, she first became known as a lyricist. She wrote "Time Goes By" for Johnny's West. On March 4, she released her first indie single, "Anata Kaibō Jun'aika ~Shine~." It was only sold at Tower Records. The lyrics were very unique and caused a lot of talk. Even though TV and radio stations didn't play it much, it reached number 10 on the Oricon Indies Weekly Chart. On May 20, she released her first indie mini-album, tamago, which was sold all over Japan. She released her second mini-album, Nikumarekko Yo ni Habakaru, in December.
On February 16, 2016, Space Shower TV chose Aimyon as one of ten new artists expected to become very popular. She performed at Space Shower New Force. On April 10, she performed for 8,000 people at a big event celebrating Unborde's fifth anniversary. On November 30, she released her first major label single, "Ikite Itanda yona," with Unborde. This song was used as the theme song for a TV show called Kichijōji dake ga Sumitai Machi Desuka?. Fans even started calling November 30 "Aimyon Day." Aimyon herself thinks November 30 is a very special day.
On February 4, 2017, Aimyon released her first movie theme song, "Bleach," for the film Renai Kitan Shu. On August 2, she released her third single, "Kimi wa Rock wo Kikanai." This song was played a lot on 42 radio stations across Japan, setting a new record for radio play in over four years. On September 13, she released her first full album, Seishun no Excitement. This album sold well for more than two years on the Oricon charts.
In April 2018, she joined a temporary group called Radio Bestsellers. They sang "Bookmark" for a radio campaign. On June 22, Aimyon had her first concert outside Japan in Taipei, Taiwan. About one thousand people came to see her perform "Ikite Itanda yona," which was popular because of the TV show. On August 8, she released her fifth single, "Marigold." This song was number one on the streaming charts for 20 weeks in a row! She also wrote and composed "Karada no shin kara made moete irunda" for a drama. On December 31, she performed "Marigold" on the famous Kōhaku Uta Gassen TV show for the first time. The show's producer said Aimyon was chosen because "Marigold" was very popular, especially with young people who use streaming services.
On January 25, 2019, Aimyon released "Ra, no Hanashi," the theme song for the animated movie Ashita Sekai ga Owaru to Shitemo (Even if the World Ends Tomorrow). On April 17, she released her seventh single, "Harunohi." This song was used as the theme for the movie Crayon Shin-chan: Honeymoon Hurricane ~The Lost Hiroshi~. She also wrote and composed "Dare ni Datte Wake ga Aru" and "Tachimachi Arashi" for the movie Sayonara Kuchibiru (Goodbye Lip). These songs were sung by the guitar duo Harureo in the movie. Starting in October, she went on a big concert tour called "Aimyon Tour 2019: Sixth Sense Story."
On July 24, 2020, she hosted a special radio show called "Aimyon's All Night Nippon."
On November 15, 2022, it was announced that Aimyon would sing the theme song for the TV show Ranman in 2023. This was special because it was the first time a solo artist born after 1989 sang a theme song for this type of TV show.
On December 8, 2024, it was announced that she would sing the theme song for the movie Doraemon: Nobita's Art World Tales. This was the first time in 10 years that a female solo artist sang a Doraemon movie theme song. She is also only the third artist to sing theme songs for both the Crayon Shin-chan and Doraemon films series.
Aimyon's Artistic Style
Aimyon gets ideas from many musicians, including Spitz, Shōgo Hamada, Takuro Yoshida, Yutaka Ozaki, and Ken Hirai. She looks up to male singer-songwriters who choose interesting words and focus on lyrics more than melodies. She especially likes folk songs.
Aimyon often writes songs from a male point of view. She likes how men can be very devoted to the women they care about.
She once said that after watching the movie Crayon Shin-chan: Fierceness That Invites Storm! The Adult Empire Strikes Back, she became interested in the Tower of the Sun and artist Tarō Okamoto. She felt a connection to Tarō Okamoto's ideas about life and set a goal to sing under the Tower of the Sun.
Aimyon has said that she hasn't fully decided on her musical style or what genre her music belongs to. When she creates songs, she writes the lyrics and plays a demo song on her guitar. Then, producers and arrangers help expand the song based on her ideas. She believes her strength as a singer-songwriter comes from her guitar and voice, and she hopes people feel she plays and sings her best.
Aimyon's Impact
Music expert Tomonori Shiba has called Aimyon a very important artist who carries on the legacy of famous Japanese bands like Misu-Chiru and Spitz. Aimyon herself has said she was the first big star to become famous through streaming music services.
Many other artists and famous people are fans of Aimyon. Voice actor Wasabi Mizuta (who voices Doraemon!) has said he is a fan. Yurano Ochi from the group Atarashii Gakko! has also praised Aimyon. Bassist OKP-STAR, who used to be in the band Aqua Timez, is also a big fan and often goes to her concerts.
About Aimyon's Life
Her stage name "Aimyon" was a nickname given to her by a friend. She releases her music in Taiwan under the name "愛繆" (Àimóu).
Aimyon is the second of six children in her family. Both of her parents were 21 when she was born. Her older and younger sisters each have four children. Her grandmother has 28 grandchildren and great-grandchildren!
When she was in middle school, she was part of the track and field club and was the assistant leader. She doesn't like studying and even dropped out of high school once. Her favorite food is ikura (salmon roe). She doesn't like fish or mushrooms because she choked on a mushroom when she was little. Aimyon loves animals and used to visit Ueno Zoo often. She says her father is her ideal type of person. Aimyon also enjoys watching Doraemon and Castle in the Sky.
