Airth Castle is an old and impressive castle in Scotland. It overlooks the village of Airth and the River Forth in the Falkirk area. Today, Airth Castle is a popular hotel and spa where people can stay and relax.
History of Airth Castle
Imagine a long time ago, around 1298! Stories say that the famous Scottish hero, William Wallace, once attacked an older wooden fort here. He was trying to rescue his uncle, who was a priest, from being held captive.
A different castle stood here later, but it was destroyed after King James III lost a battle called Sauchieburn in 1488. The oldest part of the castle you see today is the southwest tower. It was built right after that battle. An extra part was added to the east side in the mid-1500s.
The Bruce family owned Airth Castle for many years. Mary Bruce, a daughter of the castle's owner, was a friend and companion to Mary, Queen of Scots when she was in England. The Bruce family supported the Jacobites, who wanted to bring back the old royal family. Because of this, they had to sell the castle after the Jacobite rebellion failed in 1715.
Airth Castle is a very important historic building. It still has many parts from the medieval times. Because of its history, Historic Environment Scotland has given it a special status. It is a Category A listed building, which means it is a building of national importance.
Within the castle grounds, you can also see the old ruins of the parish church of Airth.
