Ajalvir (pronounced like "ah-hal-VEER") is a town and a municipality in central Spain. It's part of the Community of Madrid, which is like a large region or state. Ajalvir is located about 26 kilometers (about 16 miles) northeast of the big city of Madrid. It's also about 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles) from Alcalá de Henares, another important town. Ajalvir is in an area called the Comarca de Alcalá.
The name Ajalvir is thought to come from an old Arabic word, al-jalaoui. This word means "isolated" or "separated," which might describe how the town was once located.
Where is Ajalvir?
Ajalvir is surrounded by other towns. To the north, it borders Cobeña. To the east, you'll find Daganzo de Arriba. On its west side is Paracuellos de Jarama, and to the south, it borders Torrejón de Ardoz.
Ajalvir's Landscape
A small creek runs right through the center of Ajalvir. This creek might be a branch of another stream called "de la Huelga." The land around Ajalvir has gentle hills. The highest point is called "Cabeza Gorda," which means "Fat Head." It's 767 meters (about 2,516 feet) high and is near another hill called "cerro del tordo" (hill of the thrush).
