Ajax Bay is a small place on East Falkland in the Falkland Islands. It is located on the northwest coast, right by the water called San Carlos Water. This area is only a few miles from Port San Carlos. Ajax Bay is most known for its important role during the Falklands War.
What Was Ajax Bay?
Ajax Bay was first developed in the 1950s. A group called the Colonial Development Corporation built it. They also helped develop Port Albemarle.
The main idea was to create a large refrigeration plant here. This plant was meant to freeze mutton from the Falkland Islands. However, it turned out that freezing and selling the mutton was not profitable. Because of this, many of the houses built there were moved to Stanley, the capital city.
Ajax Bay During the Falklands War
The Falklands War took place in 1982. On May 21, 1982, British forces landed on San Carlos Water. This was the first major landing point for the British during the war.
Ajax Bay was one of three landing spots. It was given the secret code name "Red Beach" as part of Operation Sutton. The very next day, the old refrigeration plant was quickly turned into a field hospital. This hospital was called the Advanced Surgical Centre. Surgeon Commander Rick Jolly was in charge of the hospital. It helped many soldiers until June 9, 1982.
