Early Life and Studies
Albert Vanhoye was born in Hazebrouck, France, on July 24, 1923. His early life was during a difficult time, World War II. To avoid being forced to work for the German war effort, he bravely traveled across France on foot.
In 1941, he joined the Society of Jesus, a religious group of priests. He studied in France and Belgium. He earned degrees in classical literature and theology. He also got a special doctorate in studying the Bible from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He became a priest in 1954.
Teaching and Research
After becoming a priest, Vanhoye taught at a Jesuit study house. In 1963, he became a professor at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He taught there until 1998. He was also the dean of the faculty and later the rector, which means he was in charge of the institute.
His main focus was studying the New Testament part of the Bible. He especially studied the Letter to the Hebrews. He helped many students with their own studies and research.
Vanhoye also advised different groups within the Roman Curia, which is like the government of the Catholic Church. He was part of a group that helped create rules for Catholic universities.
Biblical Commission Work
From 1990 to 2001, he was the Secretary of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. This group helps the Pope understand the Bible. He worked with Pope Benedict XVI, who was then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.
In this role, Vanhoye helped create two important studies. These studies helped explain how the Bible should be understood in the Church. They also looked at how the Christian Bible relates to the Jewish people and their sacred writings.

In 2006, Pope Benedict XVI made Albert Vanhoye a Cardinal-Deacon. This is a very special honor. Even though Cardinals are usually bishops, Vanhoye was given special permission not to be consecrated a bishop.
In 2008, he led a special retreat for the Roman Curia. This is a time of prayer and reflection for important Church leaders. He also spoke at a meeting of bishops about how the Christian Bible relates to the Jewish Bible. He used his knowledge from his work on the Biblical Commission for this.
Cardinal Vanhoye was the oldest living Cardinal after 2019. He passed away in Rome on July 29, 2021, shortly after his 98th birthday.
