Alberto Teófilo Asarta Cuevas was born in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1951. He is a Spanish military officer and a politician. He became a Major General in July 2009. General Asarta has worked in important United Nations peacekeeping missions in places like El Salvador, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Lebanon. He also served with the international forces during the Iraq War. From January 28, 2010, to January 28, 2012, he was the main leader, or Force Commander, for UNIFIL.
Alberto Asarta's Military Journey
Serving in Iraq
In the first half of 2004, when he was a colonel, Alberto Asarta was second-in-command of the Spanish soldiers in the Iraq War. There were about 1,300 Spanish troops. His job was to keep areas like Diwaniyah and Najaf safe. These were very challenging times with many conflicts. Later that year, in May, he led the operation to bring the Spanish troops back home from Iraq.
Becoming a Politician
Alberto Asarta later entered politics. He was the top candidate for the Vox party in Castellón during the November 2019 election. After this, he became a member of the Spanish Parliament's Lower House.
