Johannes Albertus Morkel (born June 10, 1981), known as Albie Morkel, is a former South African cricketer. He was a great all-rounder, meaning he was good at both batting and bowling. Albie bowled right-arm medium-fast and batted left-handed. He was known for hitting big sixes in games.
Albie has a younger brother, Morné Morkel, who also played international cricket for South Africa. Their father, Albert, played provincial cricket too. Albie retired from all forms of cricket in January 2019. He is now an assistant coach for the Namibia national cricket team. This team qualified for the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup in Australia.

Albie Morkel's Cricket Career
Albie Morkel had a long and successful career in cricket. He played for many different teams around the world. He was known for his strong batting and useful bowling skills.
Playing First-Class Cricket
Albie started his career playing first-class cricket. This is the longest form of the game, usually lasting several days. Early on, his bowling was very good. He once took six wickets for only 36 runs for his team, Easterns.
Later, his batting improved a lot. He scored his first double century, which means 200 runs or more, against Western Province Boland. This was a huge achievement!
Albie also played for county teams in England. He joined Durham County Cricket Club in 2008 and 2010. In 2012, he played for Somerset County Cricket Club. He also played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 2013.
Playing for South Africa
Albie Morkel played for the South African national team in different types of matches. His first international tour was to New Zealand. He later took five wickets against the Zimbabwe national cricket team.
In 2007, something special happened. Albie and his brother Morné opened the bowling together for Africa against Asia. This was the first time two brothers had ever done this in a One Day International (ODI) match!
In 2009, Albie was named "Man of the Match" twice against Australia. He also won "Man of the Series" for his great performance in the One Day Internationals. He even played one Test match for South Africa that year.
Playing in T20 Leagues
Albie Morkel became very popular in Twenty20 (T20) cricket leagues around the world. These are shorter, faster-paced games.
Chennai Super Kings Star
He played for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2008 to 2013. He was a key player for them. His ability to hit big sixes and bowl well helped the Super Kings win many games.
In 2012, he hit 28 runs in just one over against Royal Challengers Bangalore. This amazing hitting helped his team win a very close match. Fans of the Super Kings loved him for these exciting moments.
Other T20 Teams
After playing for Chennai, Albie joined other IPL teams. He played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014. In 2015, he moved to the Delhi Daredevils. He even scored 73 runs against his old team, the Chennai Super Kings.
He also played for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016. In 2018, he was part of the Durban Heat team in the Mzansi Super League.
Albie Morkel's Life Outside Cricket
Albie Morkel comes from a family that loves cricket. His parents are Albert and Mariana Morkel. He is the middle child, with an older brother, Malan, and his younger brother, Morné.
Albie is married to Marthmari Groenewald. They have two children: a son named Albertus Johannes, born in 2009, and a daughter named Cara, born in 2011. The family lives in Pretoria, South Africa. Before he got married, Albie used to live with his brother Morné and fellow cricketer AB de Villiers.
In 2016, Albie found something interesting while on holiday. He found a piece of debris that many people believe came from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. This was a very unexpected discovery!
