Places in Haynes Township
Alcona Community
- Alcona is a small, undeveloped community right on the shores of Lake Huron. It's in the northern part of the township.
- It was first settled around 1858 by a Canadian fisherman named William Hill.
- The community was originally called The Cove.
- It was later renamed Alcona, which is also the name of the county. This name was created by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft. It's an Indian word that means "beautiful plain."
- A post office opened here in 1867.
- At first, fishing was the main activity. Then, around 1865, people started focusing on lumber until about 1880.
- Alcona never grew very big, and its post office closed in 1903.
Geography of Haynes Township
Haynes Township covers about 35 square miles (about 91 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water (less than half a square mile).
Natural Areas and Parks
- Some parts of Haynes Township are within the Huron National Forest. This is a large forest area managed by the government.
- The township is also home to Sturgeon Point State Park. This park has the historic Sturgeon Point Light Station, which is a lighthouse along the coast of Lake Huron.

US 23 is a major highway that runs along the eastern side of the township, close to Lake Huron.
F-41 is a county road that runs along the western edge of the township.
