What Communities Are in Alcona Township?
Alcona Township is home to several smaller communities. These places are not officially separate towns but are areas where people live close together.
Black River: A Historic Fishing Village
- Black River is a community right on the shores of Lake Huron. It was first settled way back in 1849. The community got its name from the nearby Black River.
- It started as a small fishing village, where French trappers and fishermen lived.
- Later, from 1876 to 1880, it became a huge center for cutting down trees (lumbering). For a while, Black River was the biggest producer of pine timber in the world!
- After the lumber industry slowed down, it went back to being a fishing village.

Hubbard Lake: A Lakeside Community
- Hubbard Lake is another community that surrounds the beautiful Hubbard Lake.
