Where is Hubbard Lake?
Hubbard Lake is located in Alcona County, Michigan. It is a big lake, about 7 miles (11 km) long and 2 miles (3 km) wide. The deepest part of the lake is about 85 feet (26 meters). Its average depth is around 32.6 feet (9.9 meters). The lake stretches across three different areas called townships: Caledonia, Alcona, and Hawes.
A Look Back in Time
Long ago, Native American tribes like the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi lived in the area around the lake. In 1819, this large area of land became part of the United States through an agreement called the Treaty of Saginaw.
White settlers began to arrive in the 1830s and 1840s. At that time, the lake was known by different names. People called it the "Bottomless Lake" because it seemed so deep. It was also known as "Coral Lake" and "Alcona Lake" for a while. In 1867, the lake was officially named "Hubbard Lake." This was done to honor Dr. Bela Hubbard, who was an important geologist in Michigan.
Fun at the Lake
Many people love to visit Hubbard Lake. There are many vacation homes, called cottages, built around the lake's shore. It is a favorite vacation spot for many people from Michigan.
The lake is a great place for fishing! It is well-stocked with many types of fish. You can find bass, yellow perch, northern pike, tiger muskie, trout, and walleye. Fishing is popular here in the summer. In the winter, when the lake freezes, people also enjoy ice fishing.
There is a community named Hubbard Lake right around the lake. This area is defined for statistical purposes by the U.S. Census Bureau. There is also a small, separate community called Hubbard Lake about one mile (1.6 km) north of the lake. This community is in Ossineke Township in a neighboring county.
