Aldair started his football career at a club called Flamengo in Brazil. There, he won the State Championship Campeonato Carioca in 1986. In 1989, he moved to Europe and joined Benfica in Portugal. He won the Portuguese Supercup with them and even reached the European Cup final in his only season there.
Playing for AS Roma
In 1990, Aldair moved to AS Roma in Italy. He played for this club for 13 seasons, until 2003. He played a huge number of games for Roma, 436 matches in total, and scored 20 goals. He even reached the UEFA Cup final that same year.
Aldair was considered one of the best players in the world in 2000 when he was picked for the FIFA XI team. Even with this recognition, he stayed loyal to Roma. He was so important to the club that when he left in 2003, Roma decided to retire his number 6 jersey. This meant no other player would wear that number. However, in 2013, the number 6 was given to Kevin Strootman with Aldair's permission. Roma fans nicknamed him "Pluto". In 2012, Aldair was added to the AS Roma Hall of Fame, showing how much he meant to the club.
Later Club Teams
After leaving Roma, Aldair briefly played for Genoa. In 2005, he played two games for Rio Branco in Brazil, helping them win a state championship. Later, his friend Massimo Agostini convinced him to play for SS Murata in San Marino. He even played in the Champions League qualifying stage for Murata in 2007.
