Pluto, also known as Pluto the Pup, is a famous cartoon dog. He was created in 1930 by Walt Disney at The Walt Disney Company. Pluto is a medium-sized dog with yellow-orange fur and black ears. He's special because, unlike many other Disney characters, he acts mostly like a real dog. He doesn't talk or wear clothes, but he can show lots of feelings with his face!

Pluto is the loyal pet of Mickey Mouse. He first appeared as a bloodhound in the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Chain Gang. Pluto is one of Disney's "Sensational Six" characters. These are the biggest stars in the Disney universe. The group includes Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, and Goofy. Even though all six are animals, Pluto is the only one who doesn't dress or act like a human.

Pluto's Cartoon Adventures

Pluto first appeared in animated cartoons. He was in 24 Mickey Mouse films before getting his own cartoon series in 1937. Overall, Pluto starred in 89 short films between 1930 and 1953.

Award-Winning Films

Several of Pluto's films were nominated for an Academy Award. These include The Pointer (1939), Squatter's Rights (1946), Pluto's Blue Note (1947), and Mickey and the Seal (1948). One of his films, Lend a Paw (1941), actually won the award in 1942!

Because Pluto doesn't speak, his cartoons often use physical comedy. This means he uses his body and actions to make people laugh. This helped Pluto become a pioneer in character animation. He showed how to express a character's personality through movement, not just words.

Pluto in Comics and TV

Like his co-stars, Pluto has appeared in many comic books over the years. His first comic appearance was in 1931. He returned to movies in 1990 with The Prince and the Pauper. He has also been in several direct-to-video films.

Pluto is also a star on television! He appears in popular TV series like Mickey Mouse Works (1999–2000), House of Mouse (2001–2003), and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (2006–2016). You can also see him in the newer Mickey Mouse shorts that started in 2013.

Keeping Pluto's Rights

In 1998, Disney worked to make sure they could keep the rights to characters like Pluto. They wanted to make sure Pluto would continue to be part of the Disney family for many more years.
