Vance DeBar Colvig Sr. (September 11, 1892 – October 3, 1967), known as Pinto Colvig, was an American voice actor. He was also a newspaper cartoonist and a circus and vaudeville performer. He was famous for playing the clarinet in a funny, off-key way.

Pinto Colvig was the first voice for famous Disney characters like Goofy and Pluto. He also voiced Bozo the Clown. In 1993, he was honored as a Disney Legend. This was for his important work in Walt Disney Films, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Early Life and Education

Pinto Colvig was born Vance DeBar Colvig in Jacksonville, Oregon. He was one of seven children. His parents were William Mason Colvig and Adelaide Colvig.

Pinto went to Oregon State University from 1910 to 1913. There, he studied art and played the clarinet in the school band. He also drew cartoons for the school newspaper and yearbook.

Pinto Colvig started his career in 1913. He performed briefly in the Pantages Theatre Circuit. He also played clarinet in the Al G. Barnes Circus band. In 1914, he worked as a newspaper cartoonist in Nevada.

He also performed "chalk talks" in vaudeville shows. These were performances where he drew pictures while talking.

Early Animation Work

In 1916, Pinto Colvig worked at the Animated Film Corporation in San Francisco. This company made animated cartoons before Walt Disney did. It was the oldest animation studio on the West Coast.

That year, Colvig helped create "Creation." This was reported to be the world's first full-length cartoon movie. Only a few frames of this film still exist today.

In 1919, Pinto made "Pinto's Prizma Comedy Review." This was the first color cartoon, but it is now a lost film.

Moving to Hollywood and Disney

In 1922, Colvig created a newspaper cartoon called "Life on the Radio Wave." It was shown in the San Francisco Chronicle and other newspapers.

Later in 1922, Colvig and his family moved to Hollywood. He worked as an animator, writer, and comedian. He first worked for Mack Sennett.

By the late 1920s, Colvig worked with Walter Lantz. They tried to start a cartoon studio together. Colvig was hired as an animator for Universal's Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons. He also wrote stories and did voice work, even briefly voicing Oswald.

In 1930, Colvig joined Walt Disney Productions. He worked as a writer and made sound effects. He created the barks for Pluto the Pup. The next year, he started voicing Goofy, who was first known as Dippy Dawg.

He also voiced other famous Disney characters. These included Practical Pig from "Three Little Pigs." He also voiced both Sleepy and Grumpy in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In 1949, he provided Ichabod Crane's screams in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Colvig worked with Disney for most of his career.

Working for Other Studios

Between 1937 and 1940, Colvig left Disney for a short time. He worked for Fleischer Studios in Miami. There, he worked on Gulliver's Travels (1939). He voiced the town crier, Gabby, who later got his own cartoon series.

He also voiced Bluto for the studio's Popeye the Sailor cartoons. Because Colvig left Disney, Goofy did not have a voice for a few years. Other actors, like Danny Webb, sometimes filled in for Goofy.

In 1939, Colvig returned to California. He started acting for Warner Bros. animation studio and MGM. He voiced a Munchkin in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

Bozo the Clown and Later Work

In 1946, Colvig was chosen to be Bozo the Clown for Capitol Records. He played Bozo for ten years, including on television. During this time, Colvig also recorded the "Filbert the Frog" song.

Colvig's last known performance as Goofy was for the Telephone Pavilion at Expo 67. He recorded his lines for this exhibit six months before he passed away.

Personal Life and Family

Pinto Colvig married Margaret Bourke Slavin in 1916. They had five sons. Their son, Vance Colvig, also became a character and voice actor. He later played Bozo the Clown on a live TV show.

Pinto Colvig was one of the first people to support adding warning labels about health risks on cigarette packages in the United States.

Death

Pinto Colvig passed away on October 3, 1967. He was 75 years old. He died at the Motion Picture Country Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.
