About Alessandro Tiarini
Alessandro Tiarini was born in Bologna, Italy. His mother passed away when he was very young. An aunt raised him instead. At first, his family wanted him to become a religious leader, but he chose to be an artist.
Alessandro was the godson of another famous painter, Lavinia Fontana. He started learning art in Bologna from Lavinia's father, Prospero Fontana. Later, he also studied with Bartolomeo Cesi.
Around 1599, Alessandro had to leave Bologna. He moved to Florence because of a serious disagreement. In Florence, he created many beautiful artworks. He painted frescoes, which are paintings done on wet plaster walls. He also decorated building fronts and made altarpieces for churches. One of his famous works from this time is Adoration of the Shepherds. While in Florence, he mostly worked with Domenico Passignano. He also learned from Bernardino Poccetti and Jacopo da Empoli.
Later, a well-known artist named Ludovico Carracci convinced Alessandro to return to Bologna. He also worked in Reggio Emilia. His painting Grieving over a dead Jesus can be seen in the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Bologna.
Alessandro painted many important works in different cities. He created a series of frescoes for the Brami Chapel in the Basilica della Ghiara in Reggio Emilia. He also painted in Cremona around 1623 and 1624. In 1628, he painted the Story of Gerusalemme Liberata for the Farnese Palazzo del Giardino in Parma.
Some of his other notable paintings include Raising of the Cross. This work is now in the Galleria Estense of Modena. He also painted Judith and Holofernes for a church in Pavia.
In Bologna, Alessandro created many religious paintings. He painted Virgin, Mary Magdalene, and St John, weeping over the instruments of the Passion for the church of S. Benedetto. For Santa Maria Maddalena, he painted St. Catherine kneeling before a Crucifix. He also made a Pietà for Sant'Antonio. For the church of San Domenico, he painted St Dominic resurrecting a child.
Other works in Bologna include Martyrdom of St. Barbara for the San Petronio Basilica. He painted a Nativity for Santissimo Salvatore. And a Flight to Egypt for San Vitale.
Alessandro Tiarini passed away in Bologna in 1668. His closest students were Francesco Carbone and Luca Barbieri.
