M.A.S. Alex Asmasoebrata (born June 23, 1951 – died January 2, 2021) was an Indonesian politician and a cool auto racer. His father was also a politician. Alex grew up and went to school in Jakarta, Indonesia.
He started his racing career in 1975. He even competed in the famous Johor Grand Prix in 1988. Besides racing, Alex was also involved in politics. He joined the Indonesian Democratic Party. Later, he became a member of the People's Consultative Assembly, which is a big meeting group for the Indonesian government. Alex Asmasoebrata passed away because of cancer.

Growing Up and Learning
Alex's Early Life and School
Alex Asmasoebrata was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on June 23, 1951. His parents were Ipik Asmasoebrata and Mirna Lilie Herani. His dad, Ipik Asmasoebrata, was a politician too. He worked in the Indonesian government for many years.
Alex went to school in Jakarta. He finished elementary school in 1964. Then, he went to junior high and high school, finishing in 1970. He also studied at a special academy for corporate leadership in 1980.
Learning to Race Cars
After school, Alex decided to become an auto racer. He took special courses to learn how to drive race cars. In 1982, he studied at the Brands Hatch Racing School. Later, in 1992, he went to the Perth Fast Lane Racing Driver School. A famous racer named Ananda Mikola was one of his classmates there!

Starting His Racing Journey
Alex Asmasoebrata began his exciting career as an auto racer in 1975. He loved speed and competition. Alex and his brother, Ferry Asmasoebrata, even raced together in the Johor Grand Prix in 1988.
The "Scooby Doo Race"
In 1987, Alex had a fun challenge. He raced against a famous Indonesian motorcycle racer named Aswin Bahar. They called this special event the "Scooby Doo Race." Alex drove a Santana car, and Aswin rode a motorcycle. The race happened at the Ancol Circuit.
They were supposed to race again in 1988. But Alex decided not to race that day. He wanted to give younger, newer auto racers a chance to compete instead. He was a good sport!
Alex's Political Path
Joining a Political Party
Alex Asmasoebrata joined the Indonesian Democratic Party in 1973. This was soon after the party was formed. He became an important leader in the party's Jakarta branch in 1989.
A Role in Government
In 1991, Alex had a chance to join the local government in Jakarta. He won a seat in the Jakarta Regional People's Representative Council. But he decided not to take the position. He wanted to focus on making his political party stronger in Jakarta.
Instead, he was offered a different important role. He became a representative for Jakarta in the People's Consultative Assembly. This is a big national group that helps make decisions for the country. Alex accepted this role and started on October 1, 1992. He served for five years.
Changing Parties and Supporting Leaders
Over time, political parties in Indonesia changed. Alex joined a new party called the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle in 1999. But after three years, he moved to another party, the Democratic Party.
He supported Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when he ran for president in 2004 and 2009. Alex even tried to become a member of the national People's Representative Council in 2014, but he didn't win a seat. In 2019, Alex supported Prabowo Subianto in the presidential elections. He was part of Prabowo's campaign team.
His Final Days
Before he passed away, Alex Asmasoebrata was battling cancer. He had both pancreatic and heart cancer. He was cared for at home. Important leaders like Governor Anies Baswedan and Vice Governor Sandiaga Uno visited him. Alex Asmasoebrata died in Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital on January 2, 2021.
