Alexander David Bregman (born March 30, 1994) is an American professional baseball player. He plays third baseman for the Boston Red Sox in Major League Baseball (MLB). Before joining the Red Sox, he played for the Houston Astros.

Alex Bregman has achieved many great things in his career. In high school, he was the first player to win the USA Baseball Player of the Year Award. In college, he was named National Freshman of the Year and was a two-time All-American. The Houston Astros picked him second overall in the 2015 MLB draft.

He made his MLB debut in 2016. In 2017, he won a gold medal with Team USA in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. That same year, he won the 2017 World Series with the Astros. He was named MVP of the 2018 MLB All-Star Game. In 2019, he won the Silver Slugger Award for being the best offensive third baseman. He won his second World Series in 2022. In 2024, he won his first Gold Glove Award for his excellent defense.

After the 2024 season, Bregman joined the Red Sox. He made his third All-Star appearance in his first year with the Red Sox in 2025.

Early Life and Family

Alex Bregman was born and grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is Jewish. When he was 13, he said in a speech that he wanted to be a professional athlete. He wanted to play for the love of the game and be a good role model.

His parents, Samuel and Jackie Bregman, are both lawyers. His father, Sam, also played baseball in college. Alex has two younger siblings, Jessica and Anthony (A.J.). His brother A.J. also plays baseball. Alex's paternal grandfather, Stan Bregman, was a lawyer for the Washington Senators baseball team. He helped the team sign famous player Ted Williams.

Alex started playing tee-ball when he was four years old. In his very first game, he made a rare unassisted triple play. He used to be a batboy for the University of New Mexico baseball team. His best friend is Blake Swihart, who also played in MLB.

High School Baseball Career

Bregman went to Albuquerque Academy. He mostly played catcher at first. In 2009, as a freshman shortstop, he helped his team win a state championship. He hit very well, with a .514 batting average.

In 2010, he played for the 16-and-under USA National Team. They won a gold medal, and he was named the MVP. At age 16, he became the first high school player to win the USA Baseball Player of the Year Award.

In 2011, as a junior, Bregman hit .678 and set a New Mexico record with 19 home runs. He was named first team All-State. He also led the 18-and-under U.S. National Team to a gold medal.

Bregman was expected to be a top draft pick out of high school. However, he broke a bone in his right hand during his senior year. This injury made him miss most of the season. The Boston Red Sox drafted him in the 29th round in 2012. But he decided not to sign with them. Instead, he chose to play college baseball at Louisiana State University (LSU).

College Baseball Career

At LSU, Bregman studied sports administration. He played shortstop for the LSU Tigers baseball team. He wore jersey number 30. This was a reminder of the 30 teams that did not pick him in the first round of the 2012 draft.

In 2013, he had a great freshman year. He batted .369 with 104 hits and 52 RBIs. He won the Brooks Wallace Award as the best college shortstop in the country. He was also named National Freshman of the Year by several groups.

In 2014, he continued to play well, hitting .316. He was named to the USA Collegiate National Team again.

In 2015, Bregman led LSU to the College World Series. He batted .312 with 22 doubles and 38 stolen bases. He won the Rawlings Gold Glove Award for his defense at shortstop. He was also a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation's top college player.

In his college career at LSU, Bregman batted .338.

Professional Baseball Career

Houston Astros (2015–2024)

Draft and Minor Leagues

The Houston Astros chose Alex Bregman as the second overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft. He was the highest-drafted position player in LSU's history. He signed with the Astros for a $5.9 million bonus.

He started his professional career in 2015 with the Quad Cities River Bandits. He then moved up to the Lancaster JetHawks. In 2016, he played for the Corpus Christi Hooks and the Fresno Grizzlies. He hit very well in the minor leagues.

USA Today named Bregman the 2016 Minor League Player of the Year. He was also named the Astros' Minor League Player of the Year.

Major League Debut (2016)

On July 25, 2016, Bregman joined the Astros' major league team. He made his debut at third base against the New York Yankees. He was the first position player from the 2015 draft to reach the Major Leagues.

He got his first major league hit on July 31. His first home run came on August 16. For the 2016 season, he batted .264 with 8 home runs and 34 RBIs in 49 games. He mostly played third base.

World Series Champion (2017)

In 2017, Bregman started the year as the youngest player on Team USA. They won the gold medal in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

He hit his first major league grand slam on May 14. For the 2017 season, Bregman batted .284 with 19 home runs and 71 RBIs. He also stole 17 bases. He played third base and had a great fielding percentage. The Astros won their division and made it to the playoffs.

Bregman played a big role in the 2017 postseason. He hit important home runs and made amazing defensive plays. In Game 5 of the 2017 World Series, he hit a walk-off single to win the game for the Astros. The Astros won the World Series for the first time in their history.

In 2018, Bregman was named AL Player of the Month in June. He hit 11 home runs and had 30 RBIs that month.

He was selected for the 2018 MLB All-Star Game. He also took part in the Home Run Derby. He hit a go-ahead home run in the All-Star Game and was named the All-Star Game MVP.

Bregman had an outstanding 2018 season. He batted .286 with 31 home runs and 51 doubles. He was the first third baseman in MLB history to have 50 doubles and 30 home runs in a season. He was a finalist for the Gold Glove Award. He finished 5th in the voting for American League Most Valuable Player.

Silver Slugger Award (2019)

In January 2019, Bregman had surgery on his right elbow. He was back playing in March.

In March, Bregman signed a six-year, $100 million contract with the Astros. This was one of the biggest contracts in the team's history. He was named the American League Player of the Month for August 2019.

For the 2019 season, he batted .296 with 41 home runs and 112 RBIs. He led the major leagues in walks. He was one of only three MLB players with at least 100 runs, 100 walks, and 100 RBIs. He also played well defensively at both third base and shortstop.

In the 2019 postseason, Bregman played well in the first series. He hit a grand slam in Game 4 of the 2019 World Series. The Astros lost the series in seven games.

After the season, he won the 2019 American League Silver Slugger Award at third base. He finished second in the voting for 2019 American League Most Valuable Player.

Recent Seasons (2020-2024)

In early 2020, there were questions about how the Astros had used signs in 2017 and 2018. Alex Bregman apologized for the choices made by the team. He said he hoped to regain the trust of baseball fans.

In the shorter 2020 season, Bregman hit his 100th career home run. He batted .242 with 6 home runs and 22 RBIs.

In 2021, Bregman had an injury to his left leg that made him miss over two months. He batted .270 with 12 home runs and 55 RBIs in 91 games. He received the Darryl Kile Good Guy Award for his character and community service.

In 2022, Bregman won his second World Series ring with the Astros. He was named AL Player of the Week in April and AL Player of the Month in August. He hit a career-high six RBIs in one game. He also hit his fourth career grand slam. He batted .259 with 23 home runs and 93 RBIs. He set a record for most career postseason home runs by a third baseman.

In 2023, Bregman drove in his 500th career run. He hit three grand slams in June, tying the franchise record for most grand slams. He batted .262 with 25 home runs and 98 RBIs.

In 2024, Bregman got his 1,000th career hit. He was named AL co-Player of the Week in August. For the season, he batted .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs. He led AL third basemen in many defensive stats. After the season, he became a free agent and won his first AL Gold Glove Award.

Boston Red Sox (2025–present)

On February 15, 2025, Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. He became the primary third baseman for the team.

Bregman made his Red Sox debut on March 27, 2025. He got his first hit as a Red Sox on March 28. On April 3, he hit his first home run for the Red Sox. He was named AL Player of the Week on April 7. On April 15, 2025, Bregman had his first career five-hit game. He hit his 200th career home run on May 7, 2025.

He was placed on the injured list in May with a leg injury. On July 6, Bregman was named to the 2025 All-Star Game roster. However, he chose not to play due to his injury. He returned to play on July 11.

Personal Life

Alex Bregman married Reagan Howard in December 2020. They live in Houston. Their son was born on August 1, 2022.

He has owned several dogs. He named two of his childhood dogs after famous baseball players: Jeter (after Derek Jeter) and Koufax (after Sandy Koufax).

Bregman practices his Spanish with his Astros teammates who speak the language. He started learning Spanish in school when he was a child in Albuquerque.
