Alexander Cameron Hunt (born December 23, 1825 – died May 14, 1894) was an important leader in early Colorado. He served as the fourth governor of the Colorado Territory from 1867 to 1869. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Who Was Alexander Cameron Hunt?

Alexander Cameron Hunt was a key figure in the history of the American West. He helped shape the Colorado Territory before it became a state. His journey from a small town mayor to a territorial governor is quite interesting.

Early Life and Big Moves

Alexander Hunt was born in New York, New York on December 23, 1825. When he was very young, his family moved to Freeport, Illinois. This is where he grew up. Later, he even became the mayor of Freeport.

Adventures in the Gold Rush

In 1850, Hunt decided to seek his fortune. He traveled to California to join the exciting California Gold Rush. A few years later, in 1858, he moved to the Pike's Peak Country. There, he joined the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, hoping to find gold.

A Role in Law and Order

During these adventurous times, Hunt was chosen for an important job. He became a judge for the Vigilante Committee of the Jefferson Territory. This group helped keep order when there wasn't a strong government. In 1861, he was appointed as a U.S. Marshal for the new Colorado Territory. This meant he was a top law enforcement officer.

Becoming Governor of Colorado Territory

On April 24, 1867, U.S. President Andrew Johnson chose Alexander Hunt for a big role. He appointed Hunt as the new governor of the Territory of Colorado. As governor, Hunt was in charge of leading the territory. He worked to help it grow and develop.

Hunt served as the territorial governor for about two years. His term ended on June 14, 1869. That's when the new president, Ulysses S. Grant, appointed someone else. Grant chose his friend Edward Moody McCook to take Hunt's place.

Later Life and Legacy

Alexander Hunt passed away in Washington, D.C., on May 14, 1894. He is buried in the Congressional Cemetery. His wife, Alice, and her parents and brother are also buried there. Hunt is remembered for his contributions to the early development of Colorado.
